Tarangire National Park is situated approximately 118 kms southwest of Arusha, covering an area of approximately 2850 km²
The name of the park originates from the Tarangire river that crosses through the park, being the only source of water for wild animals during dry season. In the dry season, from June to October, this park has a particularly high concentration of wildlife, mainly congregating along the River, thousands of animals migrate here from Manyara.
The park is well known for it's huge herds of Elephant, tree-climbing lions, and you willl also see Zebra, Wildebeest, Giraffe, baboons, waterbuck and other antelope
The park is also an ornithologists paradise with more than 500 species of birds, including the largest bird in the world, the ostrich and the heaviest bird that can fly, the Kori Bustard plus 49 species of Raptors.
On a safari to Tarangire it is worthwhile including a visit Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and if you have time, the Serengeti National Park.
Safaris in Tarangire are good all year round but for high concentrations of wildlife the absolute best months are between June and September. For bird watching in Tarangire it is best to visit between the months of October and May.
