Mahale Mountains National Park is located in the west of the Tanzania, approx 126kms south of Kigoma town, on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The park covers an area of approx 1610 km². It is a remote park that can only be reach by plane or boat. There are no roads and wildlife viewing is safely carried out on foot with a guide.
Chimpanzee tracking in Mahale is the main attraction and is always given high priority. Other wildlife you may see include elephant, buffalo, antelope, giraffe, leopard and lion, plus the park has recorded over 350 different species of birds.
Most people visiting Mahale Mountains National Park will also include a safari to Gombe Stream and Katavi National Parks, lying north and south of Mahale.
The best time of the year for a safari in Mahale Mountains National Park is between mid May to mid October, which is the dry season. The national park is open all year round and a visit at any time of the year will be rewarding. There is limited accommodation in the park, so you would need to book in advance.
