I want to do some teaching or animal based work in Africa for about 6 months in the next year (now-sept). Does anyone know how to go about this of have tips / hints / leads. My sister has been living in Lusaka for the last 2 years or so and she likes it. She's from Canada but has lived in southern Sudan for a year and Kampala, Uganda for quite some time as well so she knows better what to expect. First of all, don't go to South Africa, it's way too dangerous for a first trip. I've done a few places and can recomend Kenya, it's not as touristy as you might expect and of course they speak excellent English. If you head north you should see almost everything (animal wise) and miss the crowds. If you want it's also then not far to drop down to Tanzania. The people from go-kili were not everything I thought they'd be. They were rather pushy and unpleasant, which is a real shame because their tanzanian guide deserves better representation. I have contacted one of the companies I found on this board and have also contacted the Marangu Hotel directly. Well the guide they use is Tanzanian and according to their site almost all of the money goes to this guide and his operation over there... as well as to local Tanzanian charities. The reason I want to 'book' a trip instead of just going there and picking one up is because I will need to be on a schedule. I am with my wife and 2 kids, 6 & 4 relocating to Cape Town to live leaving the UK in Jan 05. We are all looking forward to it and are fully aware of possible dangers but these dangers are with us in the UK anyway. The education is excellent, the way of life and standards are first class. Either way I'm very intrested - I've volunteered at London and Bristol Zoo and the Natura history Museum (BMNH) and done odd bits of teaching, and have visited africa several times. Jon You should concentrate on Tanzania if you really want the African experience. Arusha national park at Arusha is one you can do without a guide although you will be hustled anyway. Also there is Tarangire and Manyara parks which cater for self drive no guide required.
