Hey
I'm from NZ and planning an elective at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital as well for June-August this year.
I have a couple of email addresses for Mnazi Mmoja Hospital to contact someone about electives - which worked fine last year but now amhaving trouble getting a reply! But feel free to try and see if you get a response. They are:

Dr Jamala Taib: jamaltaib@yahoo.com
Dr Maryam Seif: seifmariam@yahoo.com (Elective Co-ordinator at the hospital - I'd recommend try this one first).

Hope that's helpful - hope to see you all there!

Hello everyone,

I will be going to Zanzibar on the 19th of August to do an elective at Mnazi Mmoja hospital for four weeks. Just wondering if anyone else will be out there at the same time, and if anyone has any ideas about accomodation.

For those still looking at going, I wrote a letter to the postal address, and they replied by email in about two weeks. Or you could try; mmrefhospital@hotmail.com.

Cheers, Alex

Hi there,

I'm a medical student from Sydney and am attempting to organise an elective Feb-March 2009 with a friend of mine.

We've tried the emails that we found on this site and had no luck. I just sent a letter to the postal address in a last attempt.

I was just wondering if there were any other suggestions about how best to contact the hospital? Also, any idea who we should be addressing it to...Dr Seif?

Any help would be gratefully accepted
Cheers, Liz

Hello

I am 3rd year medical student at the University of Queensland in Australia and am extremely interested in doing an elective in Zanzibar (or at Muhilimbi or Kilmanjaro Hospital in Tanzania). I am in the process of organizing it now. I am hoping to undertake the elective between Feb 16 and Mar 13, 2009. I will be emailing all of the emails listed above, however it appears that they are not responding. Has anyone received a message yet? I am a little late in applying, however am still hopeful that there are spots in Kenya or Tanzania. I am also traveling by myself, so would like to keep in contact with anyone that is going over there and maybe up for some post-elective travel.

Thanks heaps, Ngoc

Hello,

I have emailed Dr. Omar who apparently is the new head of hospital (anwasul@yahoo.com). He has confirmed a placement and secure housing ($15/night - negotiable) for me from Feb 16 - March 23rd. I am a bit apprehensive as it is just an email (albeit a rather long email) from a doctor there without detailed instructions. However, the hospital isn't affiliated with a school nor did it ask for money upfront, so I guess I shouldn't expect a detailed orientation booklet. I am jetting off in February and it would be nice to know of someone when I land. So shoot them an email and maybe I'll see you there.

Cheers

Hi,
We're hoping to do an elective in Mnazi Mmoja next summer (June-Aug), we've been reading everyone's posts and were just wondering how quickly you got a response from Dr Omar? We sent a letter in the summer to the hospital then emailed him a month ago to check whether they got our letter, and haven't heard anything since. We've had problems contacting the hospital by phone and wondered if anyone has any advice for us pleeeease? Just not sure if we should be waiting around or applying to other places now.
Thanks! Dav & Fi

Hey guys,

I'm going to mnazi mmoja hospital, zanzibar from 09 Feb 09 - 06 Mar 09. Just wondering who else is going around the same time as I'm travelling on my own. Has any heard back from Dr. Omar as to where the accommodation is, as I don't want to feel completely lost when I step off the plane!!!

P.S. In response to what people asked about Dr. Omar - he may take a while to reply or not reply to the first message. And just in case any is still wondering his email address is anwasul@yahoo.com.

Hello, I have only just heard about elective placements in zanzibar this evening from my friend who is at Cardiff university studying physiotherapy. She is going to Tanzania next July for 4 weeks. So I have jumped on the bandwagon and started researching placements in zanzibar. I am currently a Psychology undergraduate at Lancaster University, but I am due to graduate in July 2009. I am hoping to have a career in Clinical Psychology and at the moment, aswell as being a student I also work part time at the local hospital just down the road as a clinical support worker (nursing). I am interested in a mental health position at Mnazi Mmoja hospital - I looked on "Work the World" and it said that the hospital have seperate mental health wings.
Does anybody know if you actually have to be a medical student to do one of these electives? Because I am reall really interested, but not a med student. If anyone has any infor please reply!! thanks alot, charlotte.

im planning on going from beginning of august to some time in september. can anyone give an up to date perspective on an elective in mnazi mmoja? also, I got the standard email response from dr omar everyone else got saying im welcome to come but have to pay whatever it is for accomodation etc. but im uncomfortable flying out on the basis of that email alone and no other confirmation or reporting instructions for the first day.

kinda feels like im flying to a foreign country, turning up to a hospital and asking them if i can spend a few weeks with them.

Anyone manage to get proper confirmation? or am i being overly pedantic?

I know that most of the people on this link are looking to organise their medical elective directly with Mnazi Mmoja, but as it (unsuprisingly) sounds as if it is turning out to be tricky, I thought I'd send you a link for the company I work for - Work the World.

I promise I'm not just trying to write an advert for what we do, I just thought it might be handy as we organise medical elective placements (for doctors, nurses, physios and midwifes) and literally take all the hassle out of sorting a decent, structured, safe placement for you.

Of course financially it is going to cost you a little bit more to go through a company to arrange your trip, but the majority of our elective students say it was worth it. No red tape, no confusion about what your placement is and where it will be.... just lots of time to make the most of your elective!

i

I was in Tanzania Zanzibar in 2008 at Mnazi mmoja Hospital for a placement as a medical student having gone there through uk agent

Having been there i managed to meet other local agencies who also do the same , placement program at the same period at a far much better price with wider network of hospital attachments which is for sure a local NGO
Their placements are to the agreed Government Hospitals like,

Kcmc Moshi, Mt.Meru District hospital Arusha, Selian District Hospital
Arusha and Ngarinaro Health centre, Muhimbili University College and
in Zanzibar is at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital

Here is the placement program that i underwent

1. Four weeks placement:
First week
Day One: Will be picked from Zanzibar Airport or Seaport to the house.
Orientation and briefing about the house and stuffs. Resting then
Orientation in town (depending with the time of arrival). Arrivals and
departures advised to be weekends if possible.
Day two: Hospital orientation and introduction to supervisor. Start
placement immediately (This will depend with the student interest).
Day three to six: Attending the hospital under appointed supervisor in
the department.
First weekend: Will pay a visit to historical areas in town and spice tour.

Second week
Monday to Friday: working at the hospital in your arranged department.
Second weekend: Safari blue for the whole day. This is the place
whereby people go for snorkeling, it’s a paradise lost paradise found.
When it’s a low tide the sand bank is found and when its high tides,
it gets lost. It is a very nice place and when you go there is also
food for lunch and soft Drinks.

Third week
Monday to Friday: working at the hospital in your department.
Third weekend: This weekend clients will be taken to Jozani forest to
see Red Colobus Monkey then driving to south Eastern part at Kizimkazi
to Swim with friendly bottle norse Dolphins. The activity takes the
whole day too.

Forth week
Monday to Wednesday: This is the last week at the placement. Will be
at the same department that you requested before.
Thursday: You will be organizing yourself and write a report about the
duties and general things of the hospital, negative and positive
during the period of your stay in Zanzibar.
Friday: Here you will present your report to your supervisor or
Hospital super intent. Also you can take your form that has to be
signed by the supervisor or in charge of the hospital incase you there
is a need.
It is the same day that there will be a farewell tonight.
Saturday: Departure day depending with the flight

The price was 2640usd per person(price valid for 2008 august) am not sure of any changes

Price includes
Return airport Transfers
Full board accommodations

this where i go Mnazi Mmoja Hospital
Mnazi Mmoja Hospital (MMH), (literally "One Coconut Hospital), is located on the picturesque coast of Zanzibar in the capital city of Stone Town. It is a government-run hospital serving the population of Zanzibar, which presently stands at approximately 1 million people. The hospital contains 400 beds and consists of a variety of specialty departments, including pediatrics, surgery, internal medicine, acupuncture, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, trauma and maternity. The hospital is fairly well-staffed with doctors, nurses, mid-wives, nursing students and a number of foreign medical students.

Stone Town
Stone Town was recently and deservedly declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Once considered to be one of the world's most important trading ports, exporting Zanzibar's famed cloves around the globe, Stone Town still maintains it old world appeal. Cross-hatched by winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings, Stone Town is a city of beauty unlike any other.

Clinical Training Opportunities
Acupuncture Students
The Acupuncture Ward of Mnazi Mmoja Hospital is open 5 days a week and accommodates approximately 20-30 patients per day. Standing only metres away from the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, the Ward is directed by a local doctor who was trained in China, and staffed with 2 Chinese physicians and 3 to 4 nurses. Although the Ward now consists of only 8 beds, it is to be expanded soon.

Students of acupuncture and licensed acupuncturists are eligible to do both short and long clinical rotations in the Acupuncture Ward any time of year. Clinicians can expect to gain a great deal of experience in needling, cupping and electrical stimulation while treating conditions such as facial paralysis, malaria, filaria, HIV/AIDS, asthma, skin conditions, stroke and many more.

Eligible PRC student must have completed the following prerequisites: a minimum of 200 hours clinical practice, OM201/202 TCM Diagnosis, and ACU111/112 Techniques and Therapeutics. Non-PRC students are also welcome to apply for acupuncture clinical placement. Please contact our Office of Admissions for more information.

Medical Students
Medical students from around the world are welcome to contact PRC regarding clinical placements at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital. We help to organize placements in hospital departments and arrange accommodations if needed. Please contact our Office of Admissions for more information.

Hello,

We are four med students from Sheffield who have organised to go to Mnazi Mmoja in June 2013. We have been in contact with Dr Omar via email, and have transferred to him the fees for placement and money for accommodation. However, we have not heard from him in a few weeks confirming receipt of this.

Is anyone else planning to go to Mnazi Mmoja, or does anyone have any more contact details for the hospital - none of the phone numbers we have tried seem to work!

Thanks
