Tanzania is to be avoided by tourists who want value for money. The country has a two-price system for accommodation and transport, where of course the standard seldom is higher or as high as corresponding to the price paid by residents. As an example Peacock Hotel in Dar-es-Salaam charges foreigners US$ 70 for a single room, US$ 55 for residents, and the rooms aren’t better than at Durban Hotel in the same city, charging around US$ 22. An exception is the New Mwanza Hotel in Mwanza, where you get a good single room for around US$ 40.-.
Also the boats to Zanzibar and train tickets are fairly expensive to foreigners. A 1 ½ hours boat ride to Zanzibar costs US$ 40.-.
On Zanzibar value for many on hotel rooms isn’t that bad, even if they too have a double price system.
