South Africa is a country of great diversity, history and a must see for world travellers. If you are considering a trip to South Africa, whether it be for work or pleasure, know that things operate very differently in South Africa.

Once you have landed in South Africa, it is recommended that car hire is the best way of getting around without having to rely on others or, more importantly, if you have no one to rely on. If you are new to South Africa, you will probably see that driving around is quite new and daunting, but, if you know the basics, not only will your trip be less stressful-it will be loads of fun too. Renting a car in South Africa, especially for those with family and children, means more flexibility with regards to your travel plans. Another thing that needs to be brought into account is that South Africa’s public transport system is very unreliable, so car hire is definitely your best option. Here are some vital tips that will make your trip both enjoyable and safe.

Driving tips
• Always book your South African car hire company well in advance. This gives you the opportunity to find out about possible free upgrades or discounted rates on South African car hire.
• Take into account how long you will need your rental car for. Sometimes weekly rates are cheaper than daily rates.
• It is often cheaper to book your car through a broker than directly through a car hire company.
• Keep in mind that most rental cars in South Africa are manual, so if you are used to driving an automatic vehicle make, sure you communicate this in advance to your car hire company.
Rules of the road:
• In South Africa, motorists drive on the left hand side of the road.
• Seat belts are mandatory by law.
• Average speeds are 60km/h in built up areas and 120km/h on highways.
• Traffic lights are referred to as “robots”.
• You will need a valid driver’s license. If your license is not in English, you will need a valid International driver’s license.
• You will need to have had your driver’s license for at least 5 years if you wish to hire a car in South Africa.
• The legal age for driving in South Africa is 18 years of age.
• The use of cell phones is illegal whilst driving.

Safety tips:
Whilst South Africa is an amazing and diverse country which is a must see for overseas travellers, it does have its downsides. It is well known to have a high crime rate, however if you adhere to the following safety tips your trip will be a safe and enjoyable one.
• Ask locals about areas that are considered dangerous and which should be avoided.
• Whilst driving in your rental car, make sure you have a GPS unit so that you reach your destination safely without having to stop and ask for directions.
• Make sure your car is in good driving condition, check your tyres and ensure you have enough fuel to reach your destination.
• Always keep your doors locked and windows closed. Ask your car hire company for a car that is fitted with an air conditioner.
• Never pick up strangers.
• Keep all valuable items out of site.

Now that you have a clear set of tips for car hire travel in South Africa, your trip should be both safe and memorable. You won’t regret visiting this magnificent country with its beautifully diverse sights and warm, friendly people.
