South-West lakeshore

I am planning a trip to Malawi later on in the year. Has anyone explored the southeast region of the lakeshore? Namely, Mawnjage to Msinje.
If so what are the road conditions like together with any available accommodation in the area?
During my last visit this area was generally avoided due to the civil war in Mozambique. It might be the right time to explore the area. Sunsets Galore!
