Located in: Tanzania - Dar Es Salaam
"Pugu Hills" is 12 KM from the airport and 25 KM from the city. Here nature starts and stretches to Selous. Pugu Hills has limited accommodation, 4 lovely elevated yurts hidden in the 6 ha. forested area.
“Pugu Hills” borders the Pugu Forest Reserve, perhaps one of the most intensively studied Forests in Tanzania, being so close to Dar es Salaam. The nature centre is visited for sportive and recreational activities in and around the centre by interested Dar es Salaam residents.
Apart from the swimming pool there is a "six-a-side" football field and a 1 km nature/running trail on the grounds. Popular hikes include visits to the cattle market, southern hills view point and cultural tourism.
The accommodation is limited to 4 bandas (elevated rondavels) in the forested area, the scale of the centre guarantees a private character for the visitors. The design of the bandas is inspired by the history of the Swahili Coast and its visitors/ invaders. There is a “Bara” banda reflecting the visit of the Zaramo chief “Pazi” Kimbamanduka to Dar es Salaam to rescue the beleaguered mzimbazi residents(Dar es Salaam) attacked by the Kamba from Kenya somewhere in the 19th century. Then there are the Chinese, Portuguese and Arab inspired bandas.
Hiking in the Pugu Forest Reserve is only possible through a permit of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. Recently (February 2012) the Government has reduced the entrance fee to the Pugu Forest Reserve for non-citizens to 10usd. The Centre can arrange for permits for a smal sur-charge. Alternatively also hikes outside the Forest REserve are possible including a visit to the main Dar es Salaam cattle market.
