Located in: South Africa - Drakensberg - Central Drakensberg
Once an old railway station, now self-catering cottages set in stunning, tranquil surrounds and unbelievably 90 seconds to the N3 giving easy access to the Drakensberg, Midlands Meander and the historic Battlefields.
Welcome to Old Beacon Hill, once an old railway station at the heart of Kwa-Zulu Natal, now converted to beautiful self-catering cottages. Set in stunning surrounds and wonderfully located, we are the ideal platform to discover what the Drakensberg, the Midlands Meander and the historic Battlefields have to offer.
Arts, crafts, game reserves, food and drink, outdoor pursuits, historical monuments, relaxation and sports are all within easy reach of the venue.
Accommodation
Old Beacon Hill has four cottages on the land, accommodating up to a total of 20 guests (and as many infants under three as you can squeeze in!). We also have an exclusive caravan/camping enclosure that boasts its own shower and toilet.
The cottages are tastefully decorated and contain everything you need to make your stay a comfortable one i.e. all cooking appliances - fridge freezer, oven, microwave etc. The bedrooms have fitted or mobile fans for the summer and electric blankets, if needed, for the winter. Each property has Braai facilities and there are over 7 hectares of private grounds to explore, especially for the guests, that includes a stream running along it, plenty of wildlife, a pond to picnic by and a gazebo (torch-lit in the evenings) all set to a back drop of hills and glorious sunsets.
Location
Old Beacon Hill is positioned in the Lowlands and set in the tranquil, picturesque KwaZulu-Natal countryside. Unbelievably this haven is less than a two minute drive to the N3 (don’t worry you can’t see or hear it !) where there is easy access to the Drakensberg - only a 25 minute drive will take you to the heart of the Champagne Valley and its mountainous environment. If its arts, crafts, food and wine you’re after, then a 20 minutes drive will take you to Nottingham Road and all the Midlands Meander has to offer.
Locally, there are beautiful drives and walks where you can see Bushman’s River in all its glory and the first of many historical Battlefield sites - Willow Grange is less than 5km away with a scenic drive that takes you up into the hills. You may want to visit a game reserve - the popular Weenan is only 25 minutes away where you can see black and white rhino, giraffe, zebra and a whole host of other marvellous creatures.
Although self catering we do supply the essentials i.e. tea, coffee, milk, bread etc and all other requirements can be attained in Estcourt town which is less than 10 minutes away by car. Here you can find the popular supermarkets and Eskort meat factory where you can buy quality meats at very reasonable prices then bring them back to braai at Old Beacon Hill in your own magnificent setting. Estcourt also has a very nice golf course reachable in 10 minutes and of course the informative Fort Durnford Museum is just around the corner.
Old Beacon Hill is the ideal base for a lengthy holiday and fantastically positioned for a quick stop-over!
Simply leave the N3 at Estcourt South and follow the signs to the Lowlands.
Head down the dirt road (keeping Midway Petrol Station on your right)for about 1km and you will see the sign for Old Beacon Hill.
