Malawi is as lovely as ever. Just don't stop by Kande Beach and do stop by places like Lukwe Permaculture Camp or the Guest Houses on the Livingstonia Plateau and Mwaya Beach Lodge. Not a lodge at all by any stretch of the imagination but 20+/-kms south of Chintheche and a great place to relaxand get to know the local people and culture. It is definitely possible to get from Jo'burg to Malawi by public transport. There is some sort of express bus that takes about one and a half to two days or so including border crossings. Many Malawians who work in South Africa use this service frequently.It is also possible to take different busses the entire way stopping off wherever you want to. If you stick to your plan ... Nkhata Bay, the islands and Livingstonia, you shouldn't encounter bilharzia at all. It is most prevelant in Cape McLear and possibly certain places in Senga Bay due to the large populations which inhabit the lakeshore areas there. All diving is very good. My daughter was born there and we stayed until she was 2 and a half. I still own Mwaya Beach Lodge near Chintheche. We returned due to personal and family reasons but it is the most wonderful place in the world for children. Most local children roam around freely with their friends until their tummies tell them it's time to head back home to eat or the sun goes down!
