Wildlife Conservation Society – Director, Northern Odzala Kokoua National Park and Buffer Zone Project (WCS-Odzala-Kokoua), Republic of Congo (Brazzaville)

The Northern Odzala-Kokoua Project is a WCS initiated project in support of management of the northern sector of the Odzala-Kokoua National Park and mainstreaming biodiversity conservation and wildlife management in adjacent forestry concessions northern Congo. The project aims to work with the Government of Congo and ECOFAC (EU managed project) on management and monitoring of the northern sector of the Park through support to law enforcement, community awareness, and tourism development. In synergy with the management of the Park, a buffer zone program is being developed based on WCS’s experience and success in working with logging companies and communities to promote improved wildlife and forest management in forest concessions. Project activities in the logging concessions focus on wildlife management, environmental education, wildlife protection, alternative activities, research and monitoring, and reduced impact forestry. WCS is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Project Director.

This position requires 70% time dedicated to day to day management and development of this new initiative, working directly with project personnel in the areas of education, research, law enforcement, and alternative protein source development. 30% time is dedicated to project accounting, purchasing, and other administrative tasks. The Director will be based at the project base in Ouesso village (population 25,000) at the edge of the Odzala-Kokoua forest in the Sangha Province of the Republic of Congo. The Director reports to the WCS Republic of Congo Country Program Director. This position will be initially established with a 1 year renewable contract with an opportunity for extension to a longer term engagement.

Experience Required

The candidate should have a minimum of 4 years practical experience working in Africa. A Master’s degree or higher in an environmental field is desired. French and English language competency is required. Ability to manage personnel, organize accounts and assist with reporting, endure forest conditions and isolation, maintain a high level of self-motivation and a strong dedication to wildlife conservation and forest management are essential. Some construction and infrastructure development experience will be helpful.
