Description

Our house is five minutes from the entrance to South Luangwa National park in Mfuwe. It stands on 200 acres of private land with a breathtaking, widescreen 180 degree view over a winterthorn studded dambo, frequented by elephant, giraffe, buffalo, puku and other game. Raised up on a ridge with a lagoon at its foot the game never strays far from this permanent water source which attracts grazers and predators alike.

The house is a large open plan bungalow with a central living room, dining room and kitchen. There is a huge master suite with private bath, WC and shower, a veranda and a kid’s bedroom attached. At the other end of the house are two further bedrooms one with a double and the other with a double and a three quarter bed. These rooms also have a private sitting area and share a bathroom with bath and shower. The main house has large mezzanine floors above half of its area which are suitable for additional sleeping space if there are extra kids in the group; spare mattresses, bedding and mosquito nets are available to accommodate these.

A stones throw away there is a self-contained cottage next to the private swimming pool which has a double bed, sitting area and small kitchen and is of course en suite. There is a loft space which can accommodate kids as well!

We are on mains electricity and the house has its own borehole. There is a landline available to receive incoming calls, Celtel coverage which if you’re a real road warrior will allow you to connect on your laptop to the internet. Alternately Flatdogs has an internet café where you can use your own laptop or their PC’s….so while your friends are out enjoying themselves you can still submit that report you are supposed to be working on at home! The house is as child friendly as a home in the middle of a wildlife area can be with mosquito nets on all beds and bars and gauze on all windows making it relatively safe from mosquitoes and other larger things that bite. To keep the kids occupied when they are back at the house you’ll have the pool (which has a paddling section) a tree house, toys and games. Babysitting can be organised locally but there we have staff accommodation with a hot shower if you want to travel with your own child carers.

Fully furnished with all bed linen, towels, crockery, cutlery and kitchen appliances with gas for backup in case of a temporary Zesco outage, our staff is on hand to clean the house and assist you. But it is self-catering and we do not offer Bar & Restaurant but  you can use Flatdogs Camp a few minutes away. However the house is ideally suited to a self-drive group who would bring with them their own supplies. There are local shops selling basic goods (flour, salt, UHT Milk, some vegetables etc but meat, dairy products and a variety of good fresh vegetables are in short supply).

So if some of the party want to fly then send Dad with the car and the grub!

We do not advise that you walk to the shops from the house as wildlife abounds in the area. You may of course contact Flatdogs and arrange for airport transfers, game drives and use of their restaurant during your stay but we would still recommend that you have your own wheels as this will allow you to self-drive in the Park for some of your trips which is most enjoyable and cheaper!

How To Find Us

Directions to Gillie & Jake’s House, Mfuwe

International Flights to Lusaka, Zambia. Regional Flights to Mfuwe

By Road

The house is about 680kms from Lusaka door to door.

The road to Chipata is pretty good at the moment with plain sailing all the way to Nyimba (350kms) which is a good place to fuel up if you don’t have long range tanks. After Nyimba there are sporadic potholes for the next 100kms until about 10kms after Sinda. Thereafter the road is good all the way to Chipata (560kms from Lusaka Airport turnoff).

There are fuel stations on route in the following (approx distances from Lusaka shown)

Chongwe (40kms)
Kachelola (300kms)
Nyimba (350kms)
Petauke (410 kms)
Chipata (560kms)

Fuel is less reliably found the further from Lusaka you get so fill up in Chipata before you leave the tar. There is fuel in Mfuwe 95% of the time but if you can carry a spare jerry can then you will always be able to get back to Chipata in the event that the BP in Mfuwe runs out the day you are leaving!

The road to Mfuwe leaves Great East Rd about 100m BEFORE the Independence Arch entering Chipata so pass this and fuel up at the Total garage on the right just after the arch. If you’ve had any tyre problems there is also a Tyre and Wheel centre on the right here where you can get your punctures fixed. If you need more supplies there is a Shoprite in Chipata and a Spar with a good coffee shop.

Once you turn back onto the Mfuwe road you will find 120kms of brand new tarmac road that has been opened all the way to Mfuwe short of a few kms of detours and this part of the journey is plain sailing for about 1hr 45 minutes
