There is company in Vancouver called 'Out of Africa' that carries zam-buk. Look for their website on the net....they have an order form and will ship tins of zambuk to you. I have ordered from them and it was fast, efficient and not overly expensive. Hope this helps!

Hello!! I live in British Columbia Canada. I was raised with Zam Buk always in our home and as my own children grew, we also used it all the time! My father and his family are English and my English grannie always had it, however it used to be easily obtainable here in Canada. About 10 years ago, it became unavailable in Canada, and my understanding was that it was English and only available in England. I've been looking for it ever since... IT IS WONDERFUL STUFF!!!!!! I was very interested in your email and correspondence and was wondering if you had any luck in obtaining it. I am currently waiting to hear from a friend in England. I'll let you know what he says. I'm also going to try the "Out of Africa" store in Vancouver... thank you to you and your contacts.

The UK store does ship to Canada, but the price is prohibitive. Also their ingredients are slightly different than the original.

Hello Susan,

The Ingredients of the Current South African Zam-Buk are also slightly different to the older English Zam-Buk (I have a tin next to me right now, it keeps well) and this in itself is different to the even older zam-buk that my mother/grandparents used. So it appears they change it depending where an d when it is sold.

It's got to be THE BEST ointment going! I'm trying to find some too - I'll let you know if I have any luck - please do the same!

It really is a wonder ointment. Brought back lots when we visited South Africa and probably out o date by now but still mounds left and using it.
Specially if you have an ulcer in the mouth, etc! Not suppose to use it for that, but found it works miracles! We did find some in the chemist here in Melbourne, but it seems not to be as good as what we bought in South Africa. Ingredients probably a bit different. Good Luck.

I recently stocked up again on Zambuk, having traced the only two manufaturers left. The most reasonable price, especially if one bought 6 at a time, was SATOOZ, http://www.satooz.com/category35_1.htm, who ship from Australia. The cost was $AU 22.8 plus $AU8 for airmail shipping to Canada.

I have tracked two variations in the constituents of Zambuk, but I would like to know when and where it originated. My guess is the 1800s. There is a place in South Afrika called Zambuk ... what is the connection? Did the British steal a formula from the Africans??? I have traced it back to 1917 in England, and my parents used it back in the '30s.

Would appreciate direct response with information.

One of the ingredients in Zam-Buk is Camphor, which is toxic by ingestion and is known to have cumulative effects. As such it should never be used in or near the mouth. Irresponsible use is one of the reasons why medication ends up being withdrawn from production.

Zam-buk was being manufactured by C. Fulford of the Zam-buk Company, Leeds, England c. 1900. He is listed as the 'proprietor' on a slightly later Canadian tin. I heard that it originated in England, and became popular world wide. There may be an early South African link as there were many people of English/Dutch descent there.
The logo on the South African tins is exactly the same as the English one in the early 1900s. My Gran was born in Cambridge, England, in 1910 and her family were already Zam-buk devotees! I would LOVE to know more!

You know as much as I do - my Gran was a nurse and was an acvocate of Zambuk and it was always in our home. I don't believe it was withdrawn from UK but gradually disappeared from the shelves and when one enquired one was told that people didn't want it any more. The truth was shops didn't stock it and it wasn't worth getting a few tins at a time. ie it was forced out due to commercial reasons. I think that ultimately, Fisons were manufacturing it.

I have just found three very illuminating old Zam-Buk advertisements from English newspapers dating back many years! The first has a blurb about the 'Zambuk Laboratories, Greek Street, Leeds, England' and reads 'Zam-Buk - The English Cure - Rub It In'. It is dated 1907, and the proprietor is listed, as I mentioned in a previuos e-mail, as CE Fulford. The second ad dates from the First World War. It shows a drawing of a tin of Zam-Buk, looking very like the design used today, with a bulldog and reads 'The Brtish Cure'. A third, later, ad (c. 1916) recommends Zam-Buk for sore feet, and says: 'Now available on four continents'.

Good work, Andrew! I have some laboratory projects which will be funded shortly under a humanitarian venture and the production of a moden ZAMBUK is short-listed. Is there any way you can scan these ads and send them to me by e-mail? This would be very useful backup material.

i don't know who was the original manufacturer of zambuk but during my childhood days, a british company called fison located in loughborough, england was manufacturing the stuff. i remember back in 95, when asking the pharmacist for zambuk in UK, they said that they don't carry it anymore. i also once work by the factory in loughborough and it looked pretty quiet. when back in malaysia, found out that roche was now producing it.

try looking for it at chinese medicinal shops. they might have it. asians don't mind the camphor and eucalyptus smell and they might stock it or know where to get it.

This certainly is a long-running thread! I started using Zam-buk on the recommendation of a friend many years ago, and am stretching out the last few bits of it. Today another friend emailed me to say someone she knew was using it for psoriasis and did I want her to find out where he got it. (I had asked her to check while in England on a trip some years back). I then punched in Zam-buk on Google and found that it is indeed available. My tin is a green tin...28 grams....manufactured in England by Fison for Fison in Scarborough, Ontario. I contacted them a few years back (because I live in Ontario) and they said it was no longer available. Could we be so lucky as to get it again? I can barely get the top off mine now! I checked the OutofAfrica website, and there it was! Woo-hoo!

regarding the origins of Zam-Buk, I have a little info that may help.
I have a piece of paper dated August 19, 1922 (nineteen twenty - two)that has an advert for Zam-Buk.
I do not know what publication it came from but it is on page 938 of something entitled "West Africa", the other articles on the page describe the history of WA and it is of almost A4 size, may be foolscap. I have only 2 pages of this document/book.

I always buy a couple of tins when Im in Malaysia, they have loads there! It's funny though, its manufactured by Fisons and shipped to Malaysia. Not expensive at all and a magical ointment, been using it for many years now.

Is it true that Zam Buk still exists? I am using the last bit from the side of a really old tin right now and I thought I would search the internet for some more! I did not expect to find so many Zam Buk lovers like myself. I'm english and my family used to buy this stuff monthly when I was a kid! My question is where is the best, and the cheapest zam buk available for someone from BC, Canada? Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

I'm from Singapore and a newly dicovered fan of Zam-buk. The version sold here is a 25g circular, flat green tin... It's manufactured in Thailand by a OLIC (thailand) Limited [ their website is at olic-thailand dot com ] under licence from Roche Switzerland. Apparently, there's another 'version' that's made in malaysia that's more potent but have never seen that around myself.

I failed to find even the mearest whiff of Zam-Buk in Southern England's shops years ago (I think it was in the mid 90's?). Quietly mourning the departure of Zam-Buk from pharmacy shelves since then, I've eeked out the almost everlasting contents in my last and littlest tin. Now I only have a few more smears left and was quite beside myself with worry - what to do, what to do... (A Drama Queen? Moi?!?) Anyway - without much hope of success - I thought I'd try a quick search online, just in case... Low And Behold... Hurrah! Success! New suppliers and this thread!

My family (grandparents/parents/myself/brother/his kids/mine/friends used this throughout our lives thus far and the fact that I suddenly could not buy it at Boots was life-changing.

I wrote to Fisons some years ago to ask why they had discontinued its production and received a reply to the effect that there was little requirement for it. I have to say that I NEVER in all the years my family used it, and introduced it to many many other users, saw an advertisement for it in neswpapers/magazines/billboards etc.. It seemed to me to be a closely guarded secret that needed and deserved much wiser publicity. I formed the opinion that it was never well marketed.

Two years ago, I discovered through 'Google', in ddesperation, that Rose & Co Apothecary in Lyndhurst (close to our home) sold it and I hot-footed it there that same day to buy , as I did, their entire stock of 4 boxes(the cardboard version) at twice the price I used pay in Boots.

I have returned on several occasions since then to buy what is newly marketed in tins. It is not the same, however. There is definitely some ingredient missing. Today, I asked the Lyndhurst supplier to enquire of their manufacturer if there is perhaps an ingredient, which used to be included but which now, by law, or for a n o reason has been excluded from the original Fisons recipe. It certainly was more potent and much, much more effective for healing sores of all sorts.

Apart from the everyday reliability of the one time Fisons recipe for Zambuk, upon which my entire family has relied for over 100 years, I found it extremely supportive since developing psoriasis in the early 1900s. The current formula as produced by Rose & Co is inadequate...can someone please replicate the original? I am sure that many people with chronic skin diseases could benefit, (especially given further research) quite apart for the innumerable every day skin disorders which are 'cured' within minutes by this most wonderful treatment.

Zambuk rules....forever!!!!!

There needs to be more investment, but in the meantime I am pleased that some form of this miracle balm exists.

I have used Zambuk for as long as I can remember and I believe that its potential as a 'cure-all' has not yet been explored/exploited.

I hope there are enough of us out there to make a difference. This website gives me confidence that there are!

I have a project to manufacture Zambuk in the near future, but in the meantime, the formula used by the South African company is different (one ingredient is different), and although it is lighter in colour, seems to be very effective. My tins were very old, so perhaps the green darkened ..... or it is the different ingredient that darkens the colour.

I would also like to know what is used as the base as the ingredients shown only amount to 8% of the actual weight.

I see there are 2 'Sheilas' posting here.....I am the earlier post, so will use my full name just to differentiate between us! I don't know where I saw or read this, but I understand that camphor is the missing ingredient in the new ZamBuk, and that it is now illegal to use it (in the prep of creams etc.). Doesn't make much sense to me!
Thank goodness I still have some left of my last tin.....how potent it is tho' remains to be seen. It's a few years old. It would be interesting to know what the base ing. are.....all 92%. Vaseline maybe?

(a) colophony - Fisons UK
(b) oil of Sassafras - Soukh Africa or Australia

but when I last checked, both of them still showed 'camphor'.

The "Buttington Blue Book" gave the following instructions: "you need two pennyworth of eucalyptus, two pennyworth of sweet oil, the same of swallow's oil, two ounces of beeswax and a threepenny box of Vaseline. Next you pour the whole in a jar and cover, then place in the oven overnight."

I bought a 30g tube here in Sydney about six months ago. Having recently given my left index finger a circular saw manicure (only mangled the end of the finger) I was disappointed that Zambuk it was no longer available.
I rang the company that was listed on the old tube and after a bit of prodding I was told that it was no longer available in Australia and volume did warrant stocking it. The person then tried to sell me on one of THEIR other products.

Anyway the ingredients listed per gram are;
Eucalyptus Oil 50mg
Camphor 18mg
Sassafras Oil 6mg
Thyme Oil 5mg
Colophony 25mg

I put an order with SATOOZ for a couple of six packs so it will be interesting to see what is in it.

Hey, I dont know if this is completely outdated, but I live in South Africa and am travelling to Canada (Toronto) in December, being able to bring any amount of Zambuk with to Canada. They sell different sizes of the wonder ointment in virtually every supermarket here in SA. And it is also quite cheap (aprox. $1.50 a large can).

Yes indeed I would be interested. It is a very long time since I saw the large tins, and would be interested in maybe 3 of them (I could only get the small 16g tins the last time). Dont know about the use of it with pregnancy, but Milner: made a mistake with the price. The middle sized ones would cost about that, small ones are about a dollar and the large unfortunately around 3 canadian dollars (15 South African Rand - that is).

The price I'm getting them for now (if its due to inflation or lack of demand I dont know) is 19 Rands, which is an estimated 4 Canadian Dollars. I think postage to Vancouver is around 3 to 7 $. So..with some maths, thats around $55 for twelve. still interested?

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner on this; just got out of hospital yesterday.

Please cancel the arrangement. I have discovered that the ingredient 'camphor' is causing problems. Apparently for animals there is "Red Zambuk", which does not have camphor, as they tend to lick their wounds and this should not be ingested.

I had a similar problem using it recently on a cold sore on my lip, as I suffer from asthma now and again: it made my breathing very difficult, so I shall have to retrace whoever said they were manufacturing RED Zambuk to see what the difference in ingredients is. All others seem to include camphor, and this may be why it was frowned upon by the authorities (well, at least it would give them a good excuse!).

In cleaning out my cabinet this morning I ran across an old tin of ZamBuk I've been hoarding for years! I have a tad bit left which I am savoring for as long as possible.

I decided to hop on the Internet to see if I could find more! Low and behold I found this thread! Interesting information and of course I'm interested in obtaining more.

Now, based on what I've read, it appears there is 2 versions...yes? If so, is any of them the original mixture? Is this original version of it available?

My tin is green (much like the tins I remember my grammie having when we were growing up) She and her family came from Leeds, England. The tin I have is 29gms and the ingredients read as follows:
28g tin. Ingredients read:
Eucalyptus Oil B.P 5.0% w/w
Camphor B.P 1.8% w/w
Thyme Oil BPC 1949 .50% w/w
Colophony BP 2.5% w/w

The following also reads below the ingredients:

I can't remember how I came to acquire this. I either snagged this from my grandparents home after their death or from my mom who probably acquired it from them. None the less, like the above poster, I consider this a real 'treasure'.

I am interested in knowing if this product is available with the above ingredients above?

I would LOVE to find more of this stuff. HELP! I am in the US, so wasn't sure if the Canadian sources will ship here.

I have an old book of historic pictures of Toronto in the early 1900's. There is a picture of the Northwest corner of Yonge and Shuter Streets which shows a large billboard advertising Zam-Buk. The pic is dated 1908. Exciting eh?

I have introduced many people to Zam-Buk who had never heard of it before. Personally, it was always in the medicine cabinet when I was a kid so I grew up with it and used it on my own three kids until I couldn't find it anymore. One of my kids had sensitive skin and was allergic to most ointments....but not Zam-Buk!

I was amazed to read this thread and realize it has been going so long. I live in Toronto Canada and still order Zam-Buk by mail from Burnaby BC. The company recently started stocking larger tins of Zam-Buk (60 grams). Their online site is

I have an old book of historic pictures of Toronto in the early 1900's. There is a picture of the Northwest corner of Yonge and Shuter Streets which shows a large billboard advertising Zam-Buk. The pic is dated 1908. Exciting eh?

I have introduced many people to Zam-Buk who had never heard of it before. Personally, it was always in the medicine cabinet when I was a kid so I grew up with it and used it on my own three kids until I couldn't find it anymore. One of my kids had sensitive skin and was allergic to most ointments....but not Zam-Buk!

I always enjoy hearing messages about Zambuk. I have a fully funded project to manufacture Zambuk in the near future and have assembled a collection of old advertisements.

Do you have the capability to scan that 1908 image into a computer and e-mail it to me? I should be very grateful.

I am at the other end of the country these days - Vancouver - but do not have a record of anyone in Burnaby manufacturing it. I shall check that website. It may have been down last time I tried it.

I get Zambuk from there all the time & they ship it to me in Canada. Last time I ordered I got 1 x 6pack of 16g tins and 2 x 60g tins and the total order including shipping was around $40.00 I think. If I remember correctly. Definetly worth it though.

And, if you have never tried the zambuk lip balm I suggest you do. I just tried it for the first time a couple weeks ago & I loved it. Now I have to order some.

I am from Singapore. I just discovered "zam buk" recently. My mum, who is 81 had a fall and use the oinment to soothe that bump she had on the back of her head. The tin of "zam buk" oinment she was using was more than 20 years old and still potent. It was running out so she asked me to buy a new tin for her. I went to to local medical shop and there were 2 versions on sale. Both were made in Thailand for Bayer. One was in a 25g tin with English wordings, the other was in a plastic jar of 36g with Thai wordings. The contents of both were the same greenish paste-like ointment. It seems that the Thai version was manufactured for the local Thai market while the other is the export packing made for sale internationally. Of course, the Thai version is less expensive. The export version can be bought from the internet via sgbox.com through their web-site and sgfairprice on e-bay. Both are Singaporean companies. If you need help my help to buy "zam buk", let me know.

I ordered some last Thursday and got the order yesterday. Does not have the strong scent that it used to, that I remember.
Will see how it works on a burn I got.

So i have used it several times on burns and blisters and have found no affect. A week ago I had another blister but this time i added Turmeric to the mix and the wound was half healed the next day (Turmeric has marvelous properties), so even though they say original recipe, or whatever the wording is, IT IS NOT.
So I will be mixing in Turmeric and more Eucalyptus to the the Zumbuk to make it work.
Very disappointed, but then lots that we use to use in the past is now diluted including Baldrian that was fantastic for stomach problems.

You're right. I could not find it either. I will contact them to find out why it is no longer on their lists, though I still see it in the picture accompanying Ointments and Lotions. I ordered 5 60gm tins last time, so it has been a while! LOL I'll let you know what I find out, or you could contact them yourself.

The reason why is that CANADA has banned Zambuk!! Obviously it is just too good ....... very damaging to the pharmaceutical industry ....... but I finally got a response to my last order (Richmond) saying that it is stopped at the border. They can no longer import it.

However, this situation should not last too long. There are drastic changes for the better coming up in the very near future.

I can't seem to find anywhere that sell and ships to Vancouver for a reasonable price. My last tin is getting low . Out of Africa doesn't sell it anymore.
