The Gambia
Introduction
Located on the west
coast of Africa, Gambia is bordered by Senegal in the north, east and south and
by the Atlantic Ocean on the west. The Gambia River, the country's
major waterway, rises in the Futa Jallon in Guinea and follows a twisting path
for 1,000 miles to the sea. In its last 300 miles, the river flows through the
Gambia, narrowing to a width of 3 miles at Banjul. Mangrove swamps line both
sides of the river for the first 100 miles from the sea; the mangroves then
give way to more open country and, in places, the red ironstone cliffs. The
land on either side of the river is generally open savanna with wooded areas
along the drainage channels.
