Day 1 – 3
Depart Cape, Township tour, Gariep (Orange) River, Fish River Canyon
We begin with a cultural tour of Cape Town’s townships and enjoy a traditional lunch before travelling north through the citrus area of the Western Cape to semi-desert of Namaqualand and our camp on the banks of the Gariep (Orange) River. Crossing into Namibia our first stop is at one of the natural wonders of Africa - the Fish River Canyon. In some places 500m deep and over 160km long, this almost rivals the Grand Canyon for its breath-taking views.
Day 4 – 7
Namib Naukluft NP, Solitaire, Swakopmund
Continuing north, we arrive at the Namib Naukluft Park. The Namib is the world’s oldest desert and home to the world’s highest sand dunes (up to 300m high). We visit Sossusvlei and (energy permitting) climb to the top for a panoramic view of the sunrise over the vast sea of sand. We continue to the town of Swakopmund, a coastal resort town sandwiched between the desert and the ocean. Relax in one of the town’s many cafes or enjoy one of the thrilling adventure sports on offer, from deep-sea fishing to skydiving and sand-boarding.
Day 8 – 12
Spitzkoppe, Bushman paintings, Etosha NP - Game Drives, Windhoek
This morning we depart from Swakopmund and travel into Damaraland to the eerie and spectacular Spitzkoppe. We continue to Etosha National Park, a reserve of over 20,000 sq. km surrounding a central salt pan, which features 114 mammal and 340 bird species. We take morning and afternoon game drives and camp for two nights near floodlit waterholes for some exciting night viewing. We continue to Windhoek, Namibia’s pleasant capital city.
Day 13 – 15
Omakheke Regions, Namibia - Bushman Walk, Okavango Delta - Botswana,
We skirt the northern reaches of the Kalahari Desert and join local Bushmen for a desert walk before crossing into Botswana and onto to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. The Okavango is a natural wetland, an elaborate world of giant lily pads, labyrinthine channels and swaying grasses. We venture out into the Okavango itself to explore the oxbow lakes and floodplains on foot and by dugout canoe (mokoro). We spend a night in a tented camp on a grassy island in the midst of this watery world for an unforgettable wilderness experience!
Day 16 – 19
Nata, Elephant Sands, Chobe Game Cruise, Livingstone, Zambia
We turn towards the northern corner of Botswana, passing Nata, Elephant Sands and Kasane. Chobe National Park is home to some of the largest elephant populations anywhere in Africa as well as lion and abundant birdlife. We take an afternoon Fish Eagle Cruise in search of elephant and hippo. From Chobe, we cross into Zambia and drive to our relaxing riverside camp in Livingstone. Why not try one of the many optional activities around Victoria Falls, including white water rafting, canoeing, bungy jumping, horse riding or a scenic flight over the Falls to name but a few. We also visit the ‘Falls’ themselves.
Day 20—25
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe - Hwange National Park -Great Zimbabwe Ruins, Bulawayo - Matobo National Park
Your first day of this tour in Zimbabwe is a day at leisure. Why not try one of the many optional activities around Victoria Falls, including white water rafting, canoeing, bungy jumping, horse riding or a scenic flight over the Falls to name but a few. We also visit the ‘Falls’ themselves. From Victoria Falls, we drive the short distance to Zimbabwe’s premier game-viewing area – Hwange National Park, where an afternoon game drive is on offer to see the large herds of elephant that the park is so famous for and perhaps see rare species like African wild dogs or brown hyena. It's then off to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city. We head into the Matobo National Park, where we game drive and track on foot to see ancient rock paintings and the last significant population of the endangered white rhino in Zimbabwe. Our last stop in Zimbabwe is at Masvingo, to view the magnificent Zimbabwe Ruins, an important archaeological site and formal trading centre.
Day 26—33
Bandula area, Vilanculos, Tofo, Inhambane, Bilene Mozambique - Kruger National Park, Johannesburg, South Africa
We cross the border into tropical Mozambique and head north to enjoy a few days relaxing at the rustic resorts Vilanculos, Tofu, Inhambane and Bilene. These feature sandy beaches fringed with palm trees, a balmy climate and the azure and the warm Indian Ocean alive with marine life. A Dhow Safari – Magaruque Island snorkelling trip is included and many optional activities are on offer. Alternatively, simply relax in a hammock, take a long walk on the near-deserted bleached-white sand or feast on a seafood lunch.
Our final stretch takes us into South Africa and the spectacular Greater Kruger area and the Kruger National Park for a full day open 4x4 game drive. Home to the ‘Big 5’, this is southern Africa’s largest and best-known reserve where exciting animal sightings are almost guaranteed. We depart early on day 14 to the vibrant Johannesburg, where our exciting tour ends.
