Day 1 – 7
The Masai Mara is Kenya’s premier game reserve with a huge range of wildlife amidst beautiful surroundings. We have two nights in the area before crossing into Tanzania and stopping in ‘safari capital’ Arusha. Haggle for curios in the local markets, see some of Africa’s most feared snakes and take an informative guided walk to a local Maasai village. We transfer to 4x4 vehicles for a 3-day excursion to the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. With superb game viewing and spectacular scenery, our first week on safari has taken in East Africa’s ‘Big Three’ game parks.
Day 8 – 16
From Arusha, we drive in the shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro to the balmy Indian Ocean coastal city of Dar es Salaam. From here we catch a ferry to Zanzibar, renowned for its fragrant, lush tropical forests, rich history, and white sandy beaches. Returning to the African mainland, we drive southwest via Mikumi and the Tanzanian highlands towards Malawi the ‘warm heart of Africa’.
NB. As we leave the truck on the mainland, basic tourist class accommodation on Zanzibar is included in the Local Payment but for the sake of flexibility meals are left for your own account. Typically we spend one night in Stone Town and the next two nights in the north of the island at one of the beaches. Your tour leader will be available to assist if you experience any problems but there are no set activities - the time is entirely at leisure.
Day 17 – 25
The enormous Lake Malawi dominates the country and there is ample opportunity to enjoy its clear waters and pristine beaches and to learn something of the lakeside culture of fishermen and traders. We continue through rural Zambia, via the capital Lusaka, to our riverside camp near Livingstone (Victoria Falls). Explore the Victoria Falls area – relax amidst the natural beauty of the area or try some of the adrenaline-pumping optional activities such as whitewater rafting, bungy jumping, gorge-swinging!
Day 26 – 29
We cross into northern Botswana to the Chobe National Park. Best known for its large herds of elephant as well as lion and abundant birdlife. Leaving Chobe, we drive via Nata to Maun - the gateway to the Okavango Delta. This is an enormous waterway system of channels, reeds, grasses and remote scenery, set aside as wildlife reserve. We explore the Okavango on foot and by dugout canoe (mokoro) and we spend a night in a tented camp for a unique wilderness experience.
Day 30 – 37
From Maun, we travel west and cross the border into Namibia where we join a local guide for a Bushman walk. Our next stop is Windhoek, the capital of Namibia before heading north to Etosha National Park. Etosha is very different from the East African parks, owing to the more arid landscape and desert terrain – game viewing is no less rewarding, however. Turning south we travel into Damaraland and camp among massive rock outcrops at Spitzkoppe on route to Swakopmund. Relax or choose an optional activity – skydive and take a bird’s eye view of the Namibian coast!
Day 38 – 43
Central and southern Namibia is home to two of the most geologically scenic attractions in Africa: the Namib Naukluft Park, with its massive sand dunes, and the Fish River Canyon, an awesome gorge almost rivalling America’s Grand Canyon. We spend the night on the banks of the Gariep (Orange) River, before crossing the border and onto Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities where arrangements end.
