Hello,

I'm moving to Kenya next year and would like to make a budget. Can anyone tell me how much will cost:
- drivers lessons and exam;
- rent a house including a servents quarter in the neigbourhood South C or Southlands in Nairobi;
- house telephone per month;
- and maybe very difficult to answer this one, but I would like to know what is the average I might spend on living in Nairobi...

Thank you.

Hello,
Welcome to Nairobi. I live in South C areas. Rent for a 4 bedroomed house goes for about 24 thousand kenya shillings per month (tip; If you search for a house BE VERY VERY CAREFUL when using the classifed section in the local newspapers. Most of the people listing the houses for rent there are conmen out to swindle you. I've been a victim to these people twice!)

- Fare to town by public means (matatu) is 30 shillings to and fro to south C. if you make 2 trips per day that comes to 60x 30=1800 per month

- If you buy your own car eg toyota and spend about 300 shillings per day in fuel that comes to about 300x30=9000 per month

- With food assuming you buy your own lunch in town you will spend an average of 70 shillings per day. That comes to 70x26( excluding sundays)= 1820

-Driving lessons comes to about 10,000 shillings with a reputable driving school.

So...

House Rent with SQ = 24,000
Fare (public means) = 1800
Food = 1820
========
total = 27,620

That comes rougly to 30,000 kenya shillings. The current exchange rate is $1= 72 shillings

that comes to about => 27620/72= $383/month

Tip: this are just the bare neccessities required to survive in Nairobi. Other additional expenses depend on your way of living

Hope this helps

Dear Mashwani,

For sure the cost of living has gone. for example electricity has gone up by more than 21%. In my home in Kilimani I used to pay electricity bill 2,000 , now am paying 5,000 plus. fuel cost and housing has also gone up.

Its very difficult to estimate your average monthly expenses since it all depends where you live.

Hello,

I'm coming down to Nairobi in September this year and have some general questions:

- How much would I spend per day on buying food outside? (3 meals, local cruisine)
- Is it possible to find flat shares and in that case how much would it cost for a furnished room per month? I would be happy to live in a secure compound in a middle class area quite close to central Nairobi.

Cheers,

Anna
