Hi,

I am going to be working at Kenyatta National Hospital over the Christmas period this year. My medical school has told me lots of information - some of which I think is perhaps a little paranoid because they only keep telling us how dangerous the area is. I was wondering if anyone knew of cheapish accomodation that is near the hospital? I have been looking on the web, but as I have never been to Nairobi before, I don't know the distances from these places to the city city and hospital.

Thanks!

Hey,
Good location of the hospital. You take a public bus from teh city centre and it takes you upto the doorstep. Reliable public transport.
Regarding accommodation, you can stay at youth hostel. It is cheaper and more convenient.
If not, we have some homestays that u would really like.
keep in touch and yeah, we can have some coffee when you get here. It is a beautiful country that will provide greatest hospitality.

Kenyatta Hospital is one area which you can access from every corner of our city. As for accomodation, there are some fine places to stay in including staying with families at reasonable rates. If there is anything in particular you have in mind, please use link below for details. As for security, its like most cities in the world and one therefore needs to take usual precautions of avoiding lonely areas, as well as moving about alone at night.

Am sure you wil enjoy your stay here.

Hi,

I'm a 3rd mdeical student at Liverpool Uni, England and intend on doing part of my elective (5 weeks working abroad) in June/July in Kenya. I have a contact for Pumwani hospital as I spent some time there in the summer just gone, and also in a clinic in the Masia Mara. Can anyone provide me with a contact name and email address for Kenyatta hospital as post is invariably too slow and telephoning too expensive!!

Thanks your help, please use the send me an email link to get in touch. Laura

KNH does not really have a website but they have links. Write your application to the managing director with all your details. Day of arrival, how many days in a week at KNH, department, Length of the elective, age etc.

when you succeed with the elective. I would be glad to provide you with accomodation at a good rate.

Regards
Paula

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping to do the same thing as Caroline, do my medical elective (in surgery) in Kenya. I would be really grateful for any information on who to contact for this!

Caroline, message me if you want to get together to do this - maybe we'll find more if both of us are looking. I'd want to be there from December 2009 until April 2010.

Thanks!

Lisa

If you are looking to apply to take your medical elective program in Kenya, I offer you the MEEA initiative which was initiated in 2006 in collaboration. The program includes full placement, accommodations, administration fees (institutional and hospital charges) and, for groups of five students or more, a three-day adventure excursion (camping. hiking, white-water rafting and host of other fun activities). Costs vary depending on largely on your duration of stay.
I have lived in Nairobi for the last six years and while it may be true that there is insecurity in Nairobi, Kenya is a lovely country and "insecurity" is really hyped (mostly by expats who earn hefty hardship pay and would therefore prefer to see the country remain a no-go-zone- but that's a story for another day).
All the best. Hope I can get to see you in Kenya....or anywhere else in East Africa.
