I have recently started a charity project to bring solar panels and laptops to villages in Africa in order to teach them how to earn a living through the internet (Africa charity). Anyone have any suggestions or feedback for me regarding this? I hope to make it to Africa by the fall of 2010 and am making preliminary arrangements at the moment. So far I'd like to start in Kenya, where I'd like to ship my truck from Alexandria, to which I would drive from Europe.

Hi there,

Sounds like you have a lot of work in Africa from the look of your website.
Kenya is a great place to start therefore I would imagine, you will need a lot of setting up and project planning, checking out the feasibility and viability on a long term perspective. This calls for a project Manager in Kenya....have you enrolled one to do the setting up?

Also, you will need to be very careful in choosing which communities need to benefit from your project for there are some communities that don't really need such kind of assistance.....hard work there!

Anyway, I can throw you some ideas on the fundamentals if you are interested.

Cheers

I have experienced Kenya, for about 3years, by starting a organization and I would just say be carefull about who you involve in your project.....some will show interest but be only after to make profit on your behalf!

I'm not sure if this will help you but check out computeraid.org. they might also be helful!

Good luck and happy new year!

Kenax,

Had a qucik look at your website (even though i somehow ended up in your translations website :-).

Yours sounds like an awesome project. I dont know if you have come across this one - One Laptop per Child (OLPC), look into it.
On setting up an organization, one of the things that kills Non Profits Organizations in Kenya, and indeed in Africa, is lack of follow-up. A great idea is implimented and when you moved on to the next community / location, the first one falls apart. After 5 years, or less, no hint of the project remains.

We have an NGO in Kibera ( a slum ) in Nairobi. We teach the youth how to make films (www.hotsunfoundation.org). We have been in existence since 2006, and still growing.

If you need any help, do contact me.

**Ps i would love to know what this guy meant by - "Also, you will need to be very careful in choosing which communities need to benefit from your project for there are some communities that don't really need such kind of assistance.....hard work there!"

left me mystified.
