I am a 24 year old female teacher from England. I am moving to Karen in Nairobi in August to teach for a year. I am looking to get in touch with people in the area to find out some information about the town. What kind of place is it like to live? What is the rent like on accomodation?

Thank you

Hey Melissa,

I arrived in Nairobi in February and am living here at the moment. I'm from the UK.

Nairobi is a great place to live, lots to do, lots of fun and warm friendly people - I think you'll enjoy your time here. Accomodation can be pretty expensive - as I found to my surprise when I got here.

Karen may be cheaper as it's out of town but you would typically pay 40,000KSH per month for a 1 bed, maybe 55,000 to 60,000KSH per month for a 2 bed place. It does vary and you can shop around and haggle too.

If you need any help finding a place or any other info, just drop me a line - be pleased to help.

N.

Instead of renting, why dont you just buy a house when you get to Kenya. No need of paying huge rentals when you can get some good house in a place like Langata, then after the year is over sell or give the house as a donation - you know, to a worthy cause.

Anyway, good luck!

Hey Melissa, I also just moved to Nairobi from Europe to work here for a year (I am a 25 year old female). My place is pretty big and I would love to share it with somebody. Shoot me an email if you are interested and I will tell you more: mvonkoschitzky@gmail.com. Looking forward to hearing from you! Cheers, Mia

Great advice on this thread.

I would like to add that you should be looking for accommodation in a secure compound that has 24 hours security at the gate... If you are paying nearly 60,000ks a month you will have this security.

Ian

Hi,

Did you manage to get accommodation?

I stay in Langatta which is about 10 minutes drive from Karen and 20 minutes drive to the town centre. I have a bedsitter and can offer it for Kshs,18,000.

Let me know if you are still interested.
