is it illegal to take african currency and have it exchanged back into one's native currency once one have left africa?

You don't specify which country.

Some countries will restrict the amount or not allow you to take their currency out.

However, you will find that your own country may not exchange many of the African currencies back into your currency. South African Rand and Egyptian Pound are ok.
