O6 DAYS NAKURU/MT ELGON/KAKAMEGA FOREST /LAKE VICTORIA

I T I N E R A R Y

Day 01:Nairobi- Nakuru
Depart from the city centre at 00900hrs for Lake Nakuru .Lake Nakuru lies in the volcana strewn rift valley,one of a chain of 8 lakes that stretch the length of kenya from Tanzania to Ethiopia.The 160km from Nairobi passes through highland farms of the Kikuyu people before descending the escarpment into the dramatic landscape of the rifct. Have lunch and the afternoon is followed by an extensive tour which focuses on the bewildering spectacle of a million flamingoes but which also seeks out the large variety of wildlife with which the park abounds.You will spot white and black rhino, rare rothschild giraffe that has 5 horns instead of usual 3,clear instead of spotted shanks(legs).A visit to the baboon cliff offers a scenic panorama of the lake below, surrounded by a vast tract of euphorbia and acacia forests. Makalia falls within the park are an additional attraction. Return for dinner and overnight at a budget hotel.

Day 02:Nakuru-Saiwa Swamp
Early departure for saiwa swamp north of kitale ,a real delight.It is the habitat of sitatunga antelope and this has been the course of the locationof the park.There are marked walking trails which skirt the swamp, duckbones right across the swamp in places and some extremely ricketty observation towers.The shy animal is not unlike a bushbuck appearance although larger and has a elongated hooves which are supposed to make it easier for it to get around in swampy conditions its hard to see how but no doubt nature has it all worked out.The colouring is basically grey brown with more red noticeable in the femalles and both sexes have white spots or stripes on the upper body.The males have long twisted horns which grow up to a metre in length.The park is also home to the impressive black and white colombus monkey.It inhabits the higher levels of the trees and not hasving the gregarious nature of many primates is easy to missd as it sits quetly in the heights.When they do move however the flowing 'cape' of white hair is very distinctive.Birdlife within the park is prolifuic.Dinner and overnight in the campsite.

Day 03:Saiwa swamp- Mt. Elgon
Depart saiwa swamp for Mt. Elgon which is the 4th highest in East Africa after Mt.Kilimanjaro, Kenya and the Ruwenzoris.The park shares with its borders with Uganda.The vegetation ranges from wet forests to alphine moorland and supports colombus monkeys,elephants buffalo and several species of antelope which are prey for the secretive leopard.You walk at the base of the mountain to the Kitum caves with a chance of seeing the animal and plant species.

Day 04:Mt. Elgon -Kakamega Forest
Early breakfast and depart for Kakamega Forest rteserve which is a superb slab of virgin tropical rainforest in the heart of aan intensively cultivated agricultural area.This forest is a home to a huge variety of birds and animalsand is well worth the minimal effort frequired to get to it.Some parts of the forest is very dcense and for a ghreater appreciation of the flora and fauna a guide with an extensive knowledge of the trees and birds accompanies you to guide youaround.Binocularsd and wet-weather gear are essential as it usually raind heavily every afternoon for a couple of hours.Dinner and overnight in the campsite.

Day 05:Kakamega forest- Kisumu- Homabay
Depart Kakamega forest for Kisumu on the shores of Lake Victoria.This is the 2nd largest citty in Kenya.On arrival procee to the impala sanctuary and to dunga known as the hippo point.Its also worth visiting the Kisumu museum whose displays are well presented and wide ranging in their variety .Theres a very good collection of everyday items from the various peoples of the area including agricultural implements birds and insect traps (including a white anttrap),food, utensils, clothing, furnitures, weapons, musical instrumenrts, and a fairly motley collection of stuffed birds and animalsd including an amazing centre piece of a lion riding on a wildbeast.Outside there a traditional luo homestead consisting of the husbands mud and thatch house and separate houses for each wife. Also visit the bird sanctuary before exploring the big magnificent market in Kisumu town.Lunch enroute. After proceed to Homa bay seeing the beautiful country side and arrive early evening to check in a budget hotel for dinner andc overnight.

Day 06:Homa bay -Ruma Nationa Park
Depart homaby after an early breakfast for ruma national park which offers visitors the chance to see the village life of the lake people .This beautiful park is wheerre you may see ther last surviving group of roan antelope in kenya.This is a large antelope with magnificent black and white facial marking and swept back horns,oribi, bohor reed buck, topi, waterbuck and buffalo are common here and leopard are often sighted .A short walk behind the lodge brings you to the gorge where mary leakey found 'proconsul heseloni' in 1946 the last common ancestor of the great apes and man.
Dinner and overnight in Karungu

Day 07:Karungu - Nairobi
After breakfast go fishing Afterwhich you depart for Nairobi arriving early in the evening.
