Day 1: Johannesburg to Vilanculos (Bazaruto Archipelago)
On arrival at Johannesburg International Airport (O.R. Tambo International) you will be met by our representative, who will assist you while you book on to your 2 hour connecting flight to Vilanculos on the warm tropical coast of Mozambique.
Vilanculos is a stepping-stone to the 2 main islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago (Bazaruto and Benguerra). This 1,600 km² conservation area has truly unique ecosystem, which boasts a plethora of wildlife, including over 180 species of birds, endemic butterflies, suni antelope and freshwater crocodiles, while the protected reefs and beaches support dolphin, game fish, giant lobster and several species of marine turtle. The area is also considered to have the highest concentration of the endangered Dugongs on the entire East Coast of Africa, making it n extremely important conservation area. The diving conditions are amongst some of the best on offer in the world. The area offers nearly 20 different dive sites, and with visibility ranging 10 45 metres, we are sure you will want to explore every last inch of each one. Water temperatures range from 28 degrees Celsius in summer (30 degrees between December and February) to 22 degrees Celsius during the winter months, providing comfortable all year round diving.
On arrival in Vilanculos, you will be met your Lodge representative, who will escort you to your Lodge, a short boat trip away.
Check into your Lodge, a stones throw from the edge of the Indian Ocean, relax and enjoy.
Day 2, 3, 4, 5: Dungong Beach Lodge, Vilanculos
Situated on the Coast within 30 000 hectares of pristine marine and wildlife territory in the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary, Dugong Beach Lodge (5 Star) combines two biospheres which make for a unique wilderness and beach experience.
This diverse eco-system of wilderness and wetland, with its powder-white beaches and crystal clear water is host to a magnificent array of beautiful creatures, which we are sure you will come across on one of the many lodge activities.
The Lodge accommodates up to 20 guests in 10 luxuriously appointed framed tented rooms with hardwood floors and Jekka thatched grass canopies, which offer an under-stated elegance and simplicity. The units also boast a private bathroom with huge feature bath, outdoor shower and private patio.
Due to the remoteness of Dugong Beach Lodge power is obtained from a generator which generally operates for a few hours in the morning and then as the sun begins to set until approximately half an hour after the last guest has gone to bed. All Chalets are equipped with lanterns and candles, which will contribute and enhance you rustically romantic destination.
The Lodge offers some of the best diving in around the Archipelago with all trips led by a Master Diver, who will assist you throughout your diving experience and enhance it by introducing you to some of the most awesome sites in the area. You are sure to see many interesting species of fish and salt water mammals including the rare dugong, Whalesharks, dolphins, turtles, tropical fish and Manta Rays. Every dive will bring you to new areas, new sightings and new challenges, enhancing your love for the beautiful blue ocean.
The Lodge is also able to organise PADI Dive Courses at the local Dive Centre for levels from beginner up to advanced, as well as refresher courses for those who havent dived for a while. There is also several optional activities which can be booked through lodge including Island Day Trips, Parasailing, Dhow Trips, Sunset Cruises, Ocean Safaris, Fly and Deep Sea Fishing Trip, as well Water skiing, while windsurfing, hobie cating, canoeing, walking and bird watching trails are all complimentary
A typical day will start with wake up call from the Resort in the way of a snack filled breakfast tray packed with light delights and freshly brewed coffee and tea, after which you will meet the resorts professional dive master, who assist you in checking your dive equipment, and will take you through the specifics of the dive location for the day. You will then head out by boat to one of the many dive sites in the area, stopping on your way to view dolphins, whales, turtles and other sea creatures. After the dive you head back to the lodge for a much deserved brunch. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the island on one of the many additional activities offered by the Resort or you may choose to lounge around on the beach enjoying the tropical sun or even take part in another dive. The choice is yours. Lunch will be served in the restaurant with its panoramic sea views, while dinner can be served anywhere you like it.
Day 6: Dungong Lodge, Vilanculos / Johannesburg, South Africa
All dreams have to come to an end, and unfortunately, this is your final morning. After breakfast and some last minute sightseeing, you will be escorted back to Vilanculos.
You will then have time to do some final curio shopping in the local markets, where we are sure you will pick up a few fantastic bargains.
You then board your onward flight to Johannesburg International Airport (O.R. Tambo International).
