| Teaching English and Child Care in Swaziland |
Assist at under-resourced schools or orphanages on child care projects |
Overview Volunteers joining this project will be based in central Swaziland and will have the option of working on child care projects or teaching at local primary schools. Those participating on the child care projects will be working at local care centres, which provide orphans and vulnerable children with food, care and education. Volunteers will teach the children simple English, maths and life skills; arrange games, activities and outings; provide care and support and assist on construction/improvement projects at the centres. Other volunteers may prefer to teach at the local primary schools. These are often over-crowded and under-resourced and are therefore in need of support. Volunteers will help to teach children English and an assortment of other subjects to help improve the children’s future employment prospects. Location Swaziland is a small, landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordered by South Africa and Mozambique. Volunteers will be based in Lobamba, in the Ezulwini Valley. Lobamba is located in the west of the country about 16 km from the capital, Mbabane. Life on the Project On the community care project you may get involved in many of the following activities depending on the timing of your placement: Care – give adult care, support and love to the children helping them feel wanted; Activities – organise games and playing activities for the children, help arrange and take them on educational outings such as visiting a game reserve; Teaching – helping to teach simple English and maths and basic life skills; Outreach and needs identification – visit homesteads to help find vulnerable children and develop profiles for them and identify their needs; Feeding programs – activities like developing trench gardens, helping to source food donations, helping to feed children; Shelter improvement – helping to improve basic shelter structures for vulnerable children; Fundraising – organising events to raise awareness and funds to help meet specific needs for vulnerable children. On the teaching project – you will usually work in timetabled conversational English lessons. Depending on your experience and interests as well as the needs of the school you may shadow a local teacher educating young children or take responsibility for teaching a class of young adults and anything in between.
