Volunteer with children in South Africa and Swaziland, explore Mozambique and visit Kruger National Park |
Overview This twelve week programme combines two popular community projects and two adventure trips. Volunteers will spend 6 weeks in South Africa, with 5 weeks of volunteer work and a further week on a guided safari in Kruger National Park. By day you will be looking for the Big Five and in the evenings you will be cooking on an open fire and camping under the African skies. At this point volunteers will be transferred down to Swaziland for another 5 weeks of work and one week exploring the coast of Mozambique. Here you will visit local markets, enjoy water sports and snorkel with whale sharks. In South Africa volunteers will have the choice of teaching in local schools or working at child care centres in the Emjindini township of Barberton. These provide care and education for disadvantaged children many of whom have broken families as a result of the AIDS pandemic. Similarly in Swaziland you will be assisting at small care centres run locally to assist orphans and vulnerable children. There are also opportunities to teach at local primary schools too, which are under-resourced and under funded. Location In South Africa volunteers will be based in Barberton, a small town in the Mpumalanga province. It is about 40km from Nelspruit, one of the fastest growing cities in South Africa, and 30km from Kruger National Park. In Swaziland volunteers will be based in Lobamba, in the Ezulwini Valley. Lobamba is located in the west of the country about 16 km from the capital, Mbabane. Side trips During your time in South Africa you will have the opportunity to visit Kruger National Park. On the first day of the trip you will enter the park through one of the southern gates and will travel to your camp. Once there you will help set up camp, put up tents, prepare a fire etc. Day 2 and 3 is spent on safari from the vehicle. Day 4 is more flexible and volunteers have the option of relaxing, joining a drive, bush walk or night drive. Day 5 you return to Barberton. When in Swaziland you will enjoy a 5 night trip in Mozambique. On day 1 you will travel to Maputo the capital and stay overnight. Days 2-5 you will stay in a beach style reeded hut at a lodge in Tofo. Once here you will have the opportunity to visit the local food and craft markets, enjoy water sports and adventure activities as well as snorkeling with whale sharks. On the 6th day you travel back to Swaziland.
