| Teaching English in South Africa |
Volunteers joining the project in South Africa will have the opportunity to teach at local primary schools or work in orphanages and child care centres. |
On the community care project your main focus will be to teach life skills to the children as well as helping to fulfill some of their most basic educational needs. At the crèches you may work with a local care giver or teacher assisting them and taking on responsibilities as your skills and experience allow. In general you may play three different roles: 1. Teaching – the children at the care points are generally without any kind of education and need the foundations of English and math. 2. Care giving – most of the children come from homes where they do not receive much attention – volunteers play an important role in giving the children this attention, playing games with them, teaching them basic life skills and giving them the care and attention they need at that age. 3. Centre development – volunteers are often involved with painting educational murals, organising fundraising events, building up the play ground and working on the care points agricultural projects. On the teaching project volunteers will be working with a number of state primary schools in the Emjinidi township of Barberton. You may take on various responsibilities depending on your skills and experience. The main focus is obviously teaching – popular subjects include English, math, science, geography, social studies and religious studies - its best to focus on one or two of these options. On both projects there are many other activities that you as a volunteer might like to get involved in; sports (football, netball – or start a new sport at the school), art, drama, music (bring an instrument and teach some kids to play), agriculture and fundraising for the development of the schools. Location Volunteers will be based in Barberton, a small town in the Mpumalanga province. It is located close to the Swaziland and Mozambique borders. It is about 40km from Nelspruit, one of the fastest growing cities in South Africa and 30km from Kruger National Park. There are plenty of things to do in the local area; such as historical and cultural tours, safaris, white water rafting and abseiling. Field Conditions Volunteers will stay at the Old Mill lodge in Barberton, a short walk from the town centre. There is a swimming pool and garden and the lodge sleeps up to 20 people in dorms with bunk beds and communal bath rooms. Bunk-bed, mattress, sheet and pillows will be provided (a sleeping bag is required). There is a verandah and there is a communal kitchen where meals are prepared. There is also a TV lounge and a communal barbecue (braai) area. Internet cafes, shops and restaurants can be found in the local area.
