After brief introductions, you will depart on your scenic five hour drive to Blyde River Canyon. The drive will give you a chance to get to know your guide and enjoy the beautiful scenery as you travel down the escarpment to the Mpumulanga Lowveld. If time permits, you will stop off at the historic town of Pilgrims Rest, an iconic historical town, established during the South African Gold Rush. Check into your Lodge, relax and enjoy Day 2: Blyde River Canyon – South Africa This morning we will explore the beautiful Blyde River Canyon. Our morning will be spent visiting the local sites of Borkesluck Potholes, the Three Rondawels, the Mac-Mac Falls and God’s Window, all providing you with remarkable vistas of the surrounding landscape and of the Canyon itself. We will also stop off in Graskop, where we will enjoy lunch at the famous Pancake House, an experience not to be missed. An alternative morning activity option is the Elephant Sanctuary in Hazyview, where you can take part in a once in a lifetime experience of walking with Elephants. Each participant "adopts" one of this amazing animals and walks "hand in trunk" as they travel along their feeding route, and if you wish, you may choose to go for a 25min Elephant Back Ride (optional extra). After lunch, time permitting guest may also choose to visit the Endangered Species Rehabilitation Centre, where you have the unique opportunity of viewing wild lion, leopard, cheetah, eagles and vultures at close quarters. These animals were found injured, poisoned or orphaned and are given a second chance and released back into the wilds. In the afternoon, we enter the world famous Kruger National Park. Game viewing opportunities should present themselves almost immediately in this vast 2-million hectare game sanctuary the size of Wales. Hopefully we will see several species of antelope, zebra, wildebeest and maybe even giraffe before we reach camp. The Kruger Park offers a choice of seven camps, each situated in a different section of the park with its own unique flora and fauna: Skukuza, Letaba, Olifants, Lower Sabie, Pretoriuskop, Satara and Berg-en-Dal. Accommodation is in simple but comfortable thatched game park bungalows, with each camp having a restaurant and a small shop. Check in, settle down and relax in your outdoor bushveld surroundings before enjoying dinner (exact camp subject to availability at time of booking). Days 3, 4, & 5: Kruger National Park – South Africa As you will have the services of a private driver/guide throughout your safari, you will have the flexibility of discussing preferred routes and traveling times with him each day. However we recommend setting off early each morning as the camp gates open (05h30 to 06h00 depending on the season), to take advantage of the best game viewing conditions of the day. Explore the vast Kruger Plains, which offer magnificent game viewing opportunities and the highest concentration of lion in the whole of Africa. Hopefully we will see at least one of the Big Five today - lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino, before returning to camp for breakfast. The rest of the morning can be spent relaxing at camp, reading or bird watching, before setting out again at the time of your choice (usually the late afternoon) for another game drive. Two game drives will be in an open-top game viewing vehicle operated by the Kruger National Park (either early morning, late afternoon or evening), with all other game drives taken with your host in an air-conditioned minibus, as this is more comfortable in the heat of the day. On top of which you will also participate in a game walk escorted by 2 expert Kruger rangers. With nearly 150 different species of mammals and over 100 species of reptiles in the Kruger Park, we hope to see giraffe, kudu, sable antelope, waterbuck, warthogs, baboons, wild dogs and many other interesting animals. In the evening, enjoy the balmy weather and pristine stars of the Southern Sky and Milky Way, as you have never seen them before – including the spectacular Southern Cross. Day 6: Kruger to Bilene, Mozambique This morning, after our final game drive, we leave the Kruger National Park and head out of South Africa and into Mozambique. After negotiating the chaos that is an African border, which we might is an extremely “interesting” process, we head west towards the coast, before taking a turn north towards our overnight destination, Bilene. The 4 hour drive is sure to captivate you, as we pass through several rustic towns, stop at local kiosks and enjoy the beauty that is Mozambique. Once in Bilene, we will check into our lovely rustic 3 star large set on the San Martino Lake and overlooking the warm Indian Ocean. You will have time to explore the area on foot and maybe take in a quick kayak trip on the lake or a sunset cruise. In the evening, you will enjoy a lovely Portuguese styled seafood meal on the banks of the lake. Day 7: Bilene to Barra Today we leave Bilene behind and travel to the sleep seaside town of Inhambane. Time permitting, we will tour the City, taking in the historical and cultural sites, forged by its turbulent past and Arab architecture. After lunch, we then travel onto Tofo, where will spend the next 4 nights, enjoying the sea, sand and all that is has to offer. We will arrive in the mid-afternoon, giving you time to check in and head to the beach for a well deserved swim. Your guide will then leave you to enjoy your surroundings, even though he or she will not be far and only a short phone call away. This will allow you some private time and as all the activities can be done directly from the lodge there is no need for a full time guide. Days 8, 9 & 10: Barra Lodge It is difficult to say how you will fill your day, either extremely active taking part on every activity possible or taking it easy, enjoying the sub-tropical weather and soaking up the Mozambique sunshine. Barra Lodge is nestled between groves of coconut laden trees on a secluded, unspoilt tropical beach over looking the crystal clear waters. A truly idyllic Indian Ocean setting where the warm Indian Ocean offers safe bathing all year round and the wide open, sun drenched beaches offer endless hours of strolling. The Accommodation is in traditional Casitas made of thatch, brick and reeds creating a charming atmosphere, all of which are a stone's throw from the beach and offer en-suite bathroom facilities. The Lodges dive/activities centre a wide range of activities enable guests to delight in the Mozambique ocean environment. The Lodge offers scuba diving, snorkeling, game fishing, kayaking, dhow sailing trips, sunset cruises, historical tours, quad biking and visits to local cultural villages. The fantastic restaurant will provide you the opportunity to feast on the extremely fresh locally caught seafood, combined with African cooking and local flavours, offering you a unique dinning experience. Day 11: Barra to Maputo After waking up to the ocean beating on the shoreline, and lovely tropical breakfast, We once again travel south to Maputo. Today will be a long day drive, but there will be a chance to stop off and enjoy the sites. We will arrive in the late afternoon, giving us a chance to explore the City by car. After checking in, we will drive to Casa do Sol, the oldest and most famous restaurant the whole of Maputo. Here we will dine over looking the ocean, enjoying good food, drink and each others company Day 12: Maputo to Johannesburg – Tour Ends After breakfast, and time permitting, a few hours exploring the city, you begin your journey back to Johannesburg. We stop off at Nelspruit for lunch. The capital city of the Lowveld, this bustling town will give you your final chance to pick up a bargain at one of the many kiosks or curio shops. Guests may choose to fly from Nelspruit to Or Tambo if they wish and at an additional cost (Please enquire when booking). Your guide will then drop you off at OR Tambo International, where he or she will say their final “good-byes”, before your board your onward flight.
