Have you ever dreamed of trekking through the African Bushveld with not a single building in sight? Nothing but the hot, dry wind blowing through the long savannah grass and trees, the sweet, dusty smell of the bush -and you! Of course you won't be alone - but you will feel the vastness and beauty of Africa! You will be accompanied by trained guides and zoologists as you embark on a truly exciting and thoroughly hands-on introduction to African Wildlife Research. The Limpopo Province, named after the great Limpopo River, borders onto Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mocambique, and is rich in wildlife, spectacular scenery and a wealth of historical and cultural treasures. Skills Required None, just reasonable fitness as we mainly walk to study sites. Volunteer Role Through your involvement, we are able to provide the funding and manpower for crucial research on various African Species. Without you, some of the projects would just not be viable! As an African Wildlife Research Volunteer you will gain understanding of conservation issues in Africa as well as first had experience of the lives of wildlife researchers. Some of our projects that rely totally on your support: * The effect of climate change on small mammals and plant species * Non-invasive elephant deterrent methods * The establishment of the Machabeng Reserve Location The research station is located on a large game reserve in the northern part of South Africa, high up in the Soutpansberg mountain range. The area is famous for its breathtaking mountain scenery, pristine wilderness and its close proximity to other tourist "must-sees" such as Kruger National Park, the Tuli wilderness area in Botswana and the Mapungubwe National Park. This area and reserve has recently been declared a National Heritage Site and are currently in the process of applying for recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
