Gain high-profile experience in environmental education and conservation, and receive comprehensive training including a two-week placement at the Kruger National Park. We are looking for independent, ambitious volunteers to work for one six months or year in and around South Africa’s most famous national parks. South African National Parks (SANParks) manages a system of twenty national parks that represent the indigenous flora, landscape and associated cultural heritage of the country. You will be placed with the ‘People and Conservation’ department at one of these parks. Wildlife is abundant and cultural interaction is crucial - you will help implement new policies and programmes developed by SANParks to integrate local communities into the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage sites within the parks.

Upon arrival the volunteer team will be grouped together for a training course, the majority of which will cover aspects of environmental interpretation, education and a background into SANParks. Also included in the training are identification techniques of fauna and flora and a recognised EFR first aid course. The training is coordinated by South African National Parks personnel and trained staff. This internship also offers interns the opportunity to gain a Field Guide Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) level one theory qualification and membership fees, manuals and exam fee are included in the internship. This qualification requires self study but will not only allow you to gain a valuable qualification but also enhance your Knowledge & appreciation about the fauna and flora of your Park.

Location
Interns will arrive in Johannesburg before attending a 2 week training course at Kruger National Park. After the course interns are transferred to the park they have been assigned to. This could be a coastal park such as Tsitsikamma on the Garden Route, or a wild arid park such as the Kgalagadi Transfrontier park. Each park is an area of outstanding natural beauty and extremely important for the future of South Africa.

Depending on your allocated park, you will live within beautiful landscapes from wild savannahs to mountains and coastal plateaus. All volunteers will have basic accommodation in the parks,
which have shared facilities with other park staff. The majority of the accommodation has electricity
and running water.
