| Comoros Discovery Tour |
The four islands of the Comoros archipelago lie between the Northern tip of Madagascar and the African mainland. The islands are some of the world’s most beautiful, with scores of empty beaches. |
Introduction Grande Comoro, known as Ngazidja by the Comorians, is the largest, and geologically the youngest of the Comoros Islands. Grande Comore is also home to the four Islands only international airport, which is linked by regular flights from Tanzania. The island’s most prominent geographical feature is the 2361-meter high Mt Karthala, the active volcano that bubbles at the roof of the island. The coast is mostly raw black lava with semi-submerged coral on the outer edge. Most of the island’s population and activity is concentrated on the marginally level west coast, whilst the sparsely populated and dramatically beautiful east coast remains quiet and traditional, with only a few tiny thatched-hut villages. As well as Grande Comoro our Discovery tour includes a side-trip to Mohéli, and reached by a short flight. Described by many travellers as a super tranquil destination and a little lost paradise the island is well worth a visit. It is the smallest, wildest, least populated and developed island of the Union. The island’s south coast, coral reefs and dramatically craggy offshore islets are protected by the Comoros’ only national park, the Parc Marin de Mohéli, which protects dolphins, whales and sea turtles. I T I N E R A R Y Day 1 - Moroni arrival Airport to hotel transfer Overnight Hotel Le Moroni Day 2 - Moroni Half day city tour, including a visit to the Arab Quarter (Old Town), bazaar, covered market and museum. Overnight Hotel Le Moroni Day 3 - North West Grande Comore A full day tour of the north west of the island, including visits to Mitsaniouli village, a Ylang-Ylang plantation, Lac Salé (salt lake), Chomoni with its excellent beach, where you will take lunch before visiting a traditional Comorian house in M’beni. Overnight Hotel Le Moroni Day 4 - Moroni to Mohéli Transfer hotel to airport Late morning departure to Mohéli reached by a scheduled 25-minute flight. Transfer airport to lodge Remainder of the day free to explore the island. Overnight Laka Lodge Day 5 - Mohéli A full day to enjoy the island. We have not pre-arranged any sightseeing or activities as Mohéli is very easy to explore independently or optional excursions can be arranged directly with the lodge. Relax and enjoy the different pace of life and meet the friendly local people. If you are feeling a little more energetic, you can arrange a guided hike across the island on tracks of virgin rainforest. Alternatively you can cycle around the island, on virtually empty roads. Then of course there are the beaches. Two of the most beautiful are Sambadjou and Nioumachoua. You can also snorkel to discover the rich marine life or even go whale and dolphin watching. Finally at certain times of the year you may be lucky enough to see giant turtles lay their eggs at night on Itsamia beaches. Overnight Laka Lodge Day 6 - Mohéli Another full day to simply relax and unwind or enjoy one of the optional excursions arranged by the lodge. Overnight Laka Lodge Day 7 - Mohéli to Moroni Transfer airport to hotel Return to Moroni by mid-morning flight Transfer airport to the Hotel Royal Itsandra Although a few kilometres out of town we have chosen the Royal Itsandra for our second stay in Moroni because of its excellent private beach. Another chance to soak up the sun and swim in the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean. For those who have heard about the Comoros' fantastic diving, the island's only dive centre is located just minutes from the hotel. (Dives to be arranged locally). Overnight Hotel Royal Itsandra Day 8 - Free day in Moroni or Mt Karthala climb Today you have the option of leaving for a climb to the summit of Mt Karthala. Although it is possible to do the climb in just one long day, we recommend that you camp at the summit in the crater itself and return the next day. The climb can be challenging and should only be attempted if you are reasonably fit. It will take about seven hours depending on your personal fitness. Although the slopes are normally blanketed in thick mist for much of the day, the summit and crater are frequently clear, rewarding you with the most spectacular of early morning sunrises. It should be noted that we only recommend attempting the climb during the dry season (between April and November). We can arrange for all camping equipment and supplies to be provided as well as a porter. For those not wishing to make the climb, you will have today and the next day to relax or perhaps enquire locally about the options to dive. Overnight Mt Karthala camping or Hotel Royal Itsandra Day 9 - Moroni Your last day in the Comoros to either relax and unwind or take the opportunity to explore more of Grande Comore. Overnight Hotel Royal Itsandra Day 10 - Moroni, Grande Comore to UK Hotel to airport transfer in time for your departing flight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Included All accommodation, based on twin/double share Camping equipment (for Mt Karthala climb) Daily breakfast Picnic lunch on full day tours of Grande Comore Assistance of local English speaking representative Not Included International flights and taxes Airport taxes payable locally Single Supplement – Please enquire Comorian Entry Visa Travel Insurance (mandatory, must include emergency repatriation – proof may be required) Optional activities including diving which must be arranged by the client locally Departure Dates Weekly departures - contact us for further details ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
