Day 2 Your first full day in Ghana. After your breakfast on the terrace of your hotel overlooking the ocean, we will set off for our tour of Accra with a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah memorial Park, the final resting place of Ghana’s founder. Set in attractive gardens, there is an adjoining museum, which contains photos, artifacts and an insight into this incredible man’s life. From here, we will visit the nearby National Cultural center, which houses Ghana’s largest craft market and also two art galleries with paintings for sale. After lunch, overlooking one of Ghana’s golden beaches, we will set off for the Du Bois centre. This is the final burial place and former home of the prominent American Pan-Africanist Dr William W Burghardt Du Bois who lead the Pan-African congress between 1919 and 1927. Vocal Anti-Segregationist and prolific speaker and writer. The center now serves as a library and research institute for students of Pan-Africanism. On our way back to our hotel, we will stop at independence square and view the enclosed flame of African liberation, which was lit by Kwame Nkrumah himself in 1961. In the evening you can relax on the hotel terrace overlooking the Gold Coast. Day 3 This morning we shall head west along the gold coast to Cape Coast. After checking into our beautiful beachfront hotel, we will head for Cape Coast castle. This UNESCO world heritage site is a fascinating, thought provoking monument to a harrowing period in the regions history. We will spend the afternoon on an emotional journey touring this slave castle, viewing the dungeons and the infamous “Door of no return”. There is a magnificent historical museum inside, which explains the whole history of the castle and Cape Coast itself, as well as a souvenir shop which sells literature on all of Ghana’s forts and castles, as well as the cultural history and traditions of this wonderful country. Day 4 Firstly we will visit Kakum National Park in the morning, after breakfast. This is guaranteed to be one of the highlights of your trip. Here, we shall walk the world famous Kakum canopy walkway, unique in this part of the world. It consists of 7 bridges attached to 7 emergent trees, 40 meters above the rainforest floor. Offering outstanding views for miles across this beautiful, tropical, Guinea rainforest. There is an excellent visitor’s center that is extremely informative about the flora and fauna within the park, which includes forest elephants, leopards and many species of monkeys. We will lunch in a restaurant built over a lake containing Nile crocodiles before we set off for Elmina and the castle of St George. This is the oldest extant colonial building in sub Saharan Africa dating from 1482. This castle is steeped in history and played a prominent part during the tragic salve trade era. There is an informative museum inside which concentrates on local history. After spending the afternoon in Elmina, we will return to our hotel to relax. Day 5 This morning we will set off for Kumasi, home of the Asantehene, King of the Ashanti’s. En route, we will be making an emotional stop at Assin Manso, an important town along the slave trade routes. The town surrounds the Ndonkor Nsuo (Slave River). This river is where Slaves were checked for fitness and bathed before being transported to Cape Coast for shipment to the Americas. In 1998 a symbolic gesture was made when the bodies of two people who were slaves from Ghana, Samuel Carson from the USA and Crystal from Jamaica were brought to Cape Coast castle and symbolically passed back through the “door of no return” and transported to Assin Manso for reburial. After visiting their graves, we will continue our journey to Kumasi. On arrival, we will check into our hotel before heading to the cultural center, which has an excellent craft market and also houses the Prempreh II Jubilee Museum that offers an informative overview of Ashanti history. Day 6 This morning, we will visit Kejetia market, the largest market in West Africa. A fascinating labyrinth of stalls, and an excellent place to find souvenirs. In the afternoon, we visit the Manhiya palace, home of the Asantehene, King of the Ashanti’s. This is a fascinating tour through the history of this powerful tribe. From the Manhiya palace, we will visit the Okomfo Anokye sword. This sword has been stuck in the ground for 300 years and marks the spot where the golden stool descended from the sky. Legend has it that the Ashanti Kingdom would collapses if the sword were ever pulled from the ground. If time permits, we shall visit Kumasi fort and armed forces museum. The oldest building in Kumasi. Tonight you will be our guests in our house for complementary drinks and a barbeque. Day 7 After breakfast, we will set off for Accra stopping for lunch on the way. On our arrival, we will check into our luxury hotel before setting off for the National Museum. Almost all the displays here are ethnographic in nature and you get a chance to view some wonderful examples of traditional crafts.
