Kilimanjaro Circumnavigation 7 Days Mountain biking around Mt Kilimanjaro Cycling Information Numbers in a group can range from 2 to 10 people. More can be catered for but plenty of advance warning needs to be given. All trips are accompanied by a Tanzanian Cycling guide, Groups over 6 people will have two guides. An additional guide can be requested for smaller groups with different fitness levels, for an additional cost. All cycling is done on dirt road, unless there are absolutely no alternatives. Guides carry hand held radios & phones for easy contact with the support vehicle. A support vehicle is provided to carry clients’ personal items and the camp. Food is prepared fresh each day. Camps are mobile ‘fly camps’ with a mattress on the floor of a dome tent. Camp beds can be provided for an additional cost. Shower tent and a toilet tent are carried. Camp lighting is by kerosene lanterns. There are often options to upgrade to either hotels or tented lodges. Bikes are provided unless otherwise arranged. Any costs of bringing in your own bike must be covered by the client. TREK fuel 70 or bikes of similar standard are provided. On large groups there will have to be a mixture of full suspension and hard tail TREK 4500 series, bikes. If you bring your own bike you are responsible for all maintenance and puncture repair. A hired bike will cover the cost of maintenance and punctures Helmets are compulsory and can be provided. Distances per day range from 50 – 70 kms per day. The support vehicle is always close by Route Information The cycle is approximately 260ish! Kms which we nicely divide up into 6 days. Your first day is spent at our Maji Moto camp, perfectly situated for an excellent clear view of the mountain and guaranteed to get those conquering juices stimulated! During this day you get acquainted with your bike plus do a short ride. The second and third day you are cycling around to Moshi and around on the eastern side of the mountain. The fourth and fifth you are around on the Kenyan side of the mountain, but still in Tanzania! The sixth you are back around on the Western side returning to the Maji Moto Camp for the seventh day. A rest day back at Maji Moto allowing for ample time to get those legs rested and relaxed with fresh spring water in preparation for the rest of your safari or return flight home. Accommodation during the cycle is a mixture of fly camping & local guest house. ITINERARY/bold] Day 1 Transfer out to our Maji Moto camp from your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi. This day is designed for you to get acquainted with our bike as well as the kind of terrain you will be cycling through. A guided morning and afternoon cycle route around the area returning to camp for a swim before sundown. Camping at Maji Moto camp, 40ishkms Day 2 You leave the camp heading east through the foothills of the ‘blue mountains’ before heading back up toward Moshi town through a huge sugar plantation. Accommodation tonight will be in a local B&B on the outskirts of Moshi. 50kms cycling Day 3 Now that you are on the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro there are quite a number of ups and downs. The route takes you around to Rongai which is one of the staging posts for the climb up Kilimanjaro. Camp in a village campsite. 40kms Day 4 Today’s cycle takes you around the northern side of the mountain close to the Kenyan boarder. You traverse through forest as you make your way slowly around the mountain. Camping, cycling 40kms Day 5 As you come around the western side of the mountain you have views across towards Mt Meru and the open plains at the bottom of the mountain. You are also very close to Amboseli Game Park in Kenya and may get a chance to watch some elephants wandering across the plains. 50kms cycling, Village campsite Day 6 Today we aim to return back to Maji Moto camp. There are plenty of down hills and local ‘shambas’ to cycle through, probably the best days cycling. 60kms Camping Day 7 This day has you resting in the fresh water spring of Maji Moto Camp. A relaxing day, walking and enjoying the local area. You can stay in camp or have a transfer for your onward safari. Cost includes: Camping & local guest houses, 3 meals per day, Vehicle support, Cycling guide, Bike maintenance, Bike hire with Helmet. Camping fees & Village fees. 2 litres drinking water per day. Not included: International flights, Visas, Extra water, soft drinks, alcohol, cultural visits.
