General cycling Info All trips are accompanied by a Tanzanian Cycling guide, Groups over 6 people will have two guides. An additional guide can be requested for smaller groups with different fitness levels, for an additional cost. All cycling is done on dirt road, unless there are absolutely no alternatives. Guides carry hand held radios & or phones for easy contact with the support vehicle. A support vehicle is provided to carry clients’ personal items and the camp. Food is prepared fresh each day. Camps are mobile ‘fly camps’ with a mattress on the floor of a dome tent. Camp beds can be provided for an additional cost. Shower tent and a toilet tent are carried. Camp lighting is by kerosene lanterns. Bikes are provided unless otherwise arranged. Any costs of bringing in your own bike must be covered by the client. TREK fuel 70 or bikes of similar standard are provided. On large groups there will have to be a mixture of full suspension and hard tail TREK 4500 series, bikes. If you bring your own bike you are responsible for all maintenance and puncture repair. A hired bike will cover the cost of maintenance and punctures Helmets are compulsory and can be provided. Distances per day range from 30 – 70 kms per day. The support vehicle is always close at hand Trip Itinerary general Info This cycling adventure starts on the Mt Range to the south of the eastern rift wall. The morning drop off enables a nice easy down hill as you head straight across the rift valley. It will take you 2 day to cycle across the rift floor so you will spend one night camping at a local village. Once you get to the eastern wall you camp in a small forest situated at the foot of the rift wall. The forest is a great place to explore on foot with encounters with small antelope, giraffe and bush pigs plus of courses the baboons & blue monkeys. The area is populated by the Massai tribe and cultural home visits are also possible. On leaving the forest you spend the morning cycling through a sprawling maasia village and into the town of Mto wa Mbu. Here you meet the support car which will transfer you to Karatu village. The following day you cycle down to Lake Eyasi, camping on its shores. The next day you cycle further along the lake before heading up another escarpment to the Ngorongoro crater. This is a tough cycle and you may well make use of the support vehicle. The next 3 days allow for some rest and gives you a chance for game viewing in the Ngorongoro crater and then in the Serengeti as you drive up to the northern part of the park. The cycling continues from the North of Serengeti National park and you follow a dirt road down the eastern boundary of the park 2 days cycling and you reach Lake Natron. You have two days here to either explore on foot or bike. A night option is also to climb Oldonyo Lengai. From Natron you drive back to Arusha. Itinerary Day 1 An early morning transfer, 45 mins drive, from your Arusha hotel to the drop off point high up on one of the Rift valleys Mountain ranges. You start your cycling on a dirt road affording great views as you descend and head toward the Maasai village where you spend the night. 40kms cycling. Camping Day 2 After breakfast you head towards the eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley. You cycle across a huge open area where you will probably encounter plain animals like Zebra, Giraffe and other antelope, Mt Oldonyo Lengai may also be in view. Tonight you will camp on the edge of a small forest situated at the foot of the Great Rift Valley Wall. 50 – 70kms cycling. Camping Day 3 The forest floor is great for exploring on foot, the area also has great biking terrain for exploring. The local Maasai people welcome home visits for some cultural interaction. You return to your forest camp for the night. 20/30kms cycling option Day 4 After a relaxed morning you take a short cycle to the nearby town of Mto wa mbu where you will be picked up by your support vehicle and transferred to the town of Karatu. An early afternoon arrival at your camp will give you time to chill out or take a walk. 20kms cycle. Hotel or lodge upgrade possible Day 5 Your choice of getting a lift or cycling on paved road to the dirt road, where you follow the descent down to Lake Eyasi. A nice easy day today as you cruise on down toward the lake. You stay alongside the lake shores. 50kms, Camping with tented lodge upgrade possible. Day 6 You cycle further along the lake shore and then as far as possible up the rift wall before being helped the rest of the way by your support vehicle up to the Ngorongoro crater. You stay on the ridge of the crater tonight. 40kms cycling. Camping with lodge upgrade possible. Day 7 Full days game drive into the Crater. This offers great wildlife viewing, birding and photography. You return to your camp or lodge in the afternoon. Day 8 You leave the Ngorongoro conservation area and drive through to the Serengeti via a visit to Oldevai gorge. Lots more chances for game viewing, photography and birding. You camp at the seronera river area. Lodge upgrade possible Day 9 You drive up to the north of the park to Kliens gate. Plenty of chance for game viewing on route. You camp at the Lobo campsite. Lodge upgrade possible. Day 10 The bikes are taken of the roof and you start the cycle following a dirt road that goes south down the boundary of the Serengeti. Chance meetings with the local people and possibly wildlife as you cycle this road towards the town of Loliondo. 50kms cycling Camp at village campsite. Day 11 Continuing south through a different tribal area before descending the breathtaking road down into the Lake Natron area. You will be cycling through a different tribal group today called the Sonjo people, arch enemies to the Maasai! Staying in Lake Natron camp. 60 -70kms cycling, Tented lodge upgrade possible Day 12 A relaxing day with the chance to either explore the local area on foot or bike with walks to a nearby water fall, and if wanted a night hike/climb up Oldonyo Lengai. Cultural visits are also arranged. 20kms cycling option. Camping with tented lodge upgrade. Day 13 If you have climbed the mountain you will not return till mid day and you will need the rest of the day to relax. There is plenty for the rest of the group to do during the day, or simply chill out at the river. Natron campsite or tented lodge upgrade. Day 14 You are transferred back to Arusha Town. The cost includes: Bike hire & helmet, bike maintanance/punctures! exclusive use of 4x4 vehicle, Guides, National Parks entrance fees, Ngorongoro Crater descent fee x1, Village fees, Camping fees, 3 meals a day, Maasai walking guides. 3lts water per day, transfers. Not included: International Flights, visas, extra water, soft drinks, alcohol, Oldonyo Lengai climb, local cultural tours/visits, accommodation upgrades.
