Introduction
Our small group itinerary is unique, the only fixed dated tour sold in the UK. As São Tomé receives fewer than 20 tourists a week, we know this is a special opportunity to explore this former Portuguese colony. We offer the perfect mix of adventure, discovery, and a few comforts along the way, including a stay at an excellent resort that straddles the Equator.
Join us on our pioneering São Tomé Discovery tour, taking in the highlights of this little visited West African country. During our 8-day itinerary, we will travel to the interior of the island, staying at a Roça, or Plantation House. We include some trekking which can be strenuous, but you will be rewarded with fine views of the lush landscape as we continue through a succession of valleys and ridges. Alternatively, we can transfer you by 4WD.
Once we have reached the coast, there will be time to relax, and take a swim in one of the beautiful bays, before reaching our second Roça for a comfortable overnight stay. The following day we travel to the southernmost point of São Tomé island. A short boat transfer brings us to Rolas Island. Our stay will be at the island’s luxury, international standard resort. Enjoy the excellent facilities and fine beaches, and be sure to visit the Equator Mark that crosses the island. Finally we return to delightful Sao Tome Town for our final night.
I T I N E R A R Y
Day 1 - São Tomé
Arrive in São Tomé and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or to take a walk and explore the sleepy capital, São Tomé town. Overnight Hotel Miramar or similar. (D)
Day 2 - São Tomé to Bombaim
Explore the island’s capital on a tour of the city. Among other sites we visit the National Museum, the local market and the cathedral. We continue by 4WD to the coffee plantation of Monte Café in the mountainous interior, where we can see how coffee is produced. After lunch we take an easy hike to Bombaim on the border of Obo National Park, passing a pretty waterfall en route. We stay tonight in Roca Bombain, an old plantation guesthouse surrounded by mountains and forest. (BD)
Day 3 - São João dos Angolares
Transfer by 4WD to São João, on the island’s east coast. Once we arrive there is time to explore the local area on foot, perhaps venturing down to the beach or checking out the tiny but relaxed town. For the next two night nights we stay at the Roca São João dos Angolares. (BD)
Day 4 - São João dos Angolares
Day at leisure exploring the local area or visiting the nearby picturesque beaches, fringed with coconut palms and unusual blowholes. (BLD)
Day 5 - Rolas Island
After breakfast at the plantation house, drive to the southern tip of São Tomé island and transfer by boat from Ponta Baleia to Rolas Island, straddling the equator. Relax and enjoy the charms of this isolated outpost of the African continent. Overnight Pestana Equador Island Resort. (BD)
Day 6 - Rolas Island
A free day. Perhaps visit the Equator mark, enjoy the beach or visit the natural blowholes along the coast. Overnight Pestana Equador Island Resort. (BD)
Day 7 - São Tomé Town
Transfer back to the mainland and along the east Coast to São Tomé Town where the day is free to explore this charming sleepy capital further. Overnight Hotel Miramar or similar. (BD)
Day 8 - São Tomé Town
