WORLD CULTURAL HERITAGE PROGRAMME – KENYA COAST Day 01 Pick-up transfer to one of the North or South Coast Hotels in Mombasa for overnight. Day 02 It was in 1948 that Vasco da Gama first landed in the fishing village of Malindi, receiving a much warmer welcome than at Mombasa where he quickly upped anchor. We collect you from your hotel after breakfast and travel 125 kms north to Malindi, a delightful resort which still retains the atmosphere of Swahili fishing village. There are several sophisticated hotels and variety of markets and shops. On the way we will call in at Gede, the ancient ruined city that was mysteriously abandoned in the 17th Century. You will also have the opportunity to visit the colourful coral gardens in a glass bottomed boat to admire the variety of tropical fish (remember to take swimsuits and tough soled beach shoes). Lunch will be at the Scorpio Villas. After lunch the tour continues to a snake farm and falconry before returning to your hotel, arriving in the early evening for an overnight. Day 03 The city of Mombasa, spread over a small coral island, has a long, colourful history. It was identified as a port in an Egyptian guide published in Alexandria in AD 80. In 1948 Arab settlers gave such a hostile reception to the explorer Vasco da Gama that he sailed on to Malindi. Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1953 to secure their position in Mombasa, under siege for more than 33 months before it fell to the Sultan of Oman in 1699. For thousands of years dhows have across the Indian Ocean carrying rare and exotic cargoes of spices and ivory. These romantic old sailing vessels have now been largely replaced, but they can still be seen on Mombasa Harbour on balmy African evenings. Our tour starts on the north coast where we visit the Dr. Krapf Ludwig monument, from which there is a magnificent view of the Old Port and Fort Jesus. During the drive around the island our guide will point out places of historical and political interest. The tour then goes on the mainland to visit the Akamba Handicraft Industry Co-operative Society where you will be able to watch the craftsmen at work and bargain over their handicrafts. Returning to the island we spend some time exploring Fort Jesus Museum and wander through the old town admiring the myriad of shops selling perfumes, embroideries, wood or stone carvings, sea-chests and even Persian rugs. There will be a coffee break and an opportunity for shopping for souvenirs. At the completion of the tour we will return you to the doorstep of your hotel. Day 04 Our Safari leaves Mombasa and drives north towards the vast wilderness of Tsavo East, Kenya’s oldest and largest park. We stop for lunch at Voi Safari Lodge or Ndololo.
