| Kadiki Kids- Volunteer in a Preschool in Africa |
Assist teachers with local kids between 2 and 6 in various pre-schools in the colourful and vibrant township of Kayalethu. Playing games, teaching English and helping with the syllabus are all part of the daily schedule. No experience necessary. |
There are over 40 preschools in the Kayalethu township of Knysna, South Africa. These are generally initiatied by stay-at-home moms or women without formal employment who take it upon themselves to provide a service to the community. Through the Knysna AIDS council and Knysna Education Trust, these women are becoming accredited and trained in pre-school education. Currently, there are at least 10 accredited preschools in the township, each looking after at least 40-60 kids between the ages of 2 and 6. We work with a minimum of 5 preschools, providing support through volunteer involvement and starting sustaibable projects. Work with the teachers of BONGANI, EYETHU, MAGDALINES, SINETHEMBA or SIYAFUNDA creche and be the difference in the lives of these children! Who Should Apply People who enjoy working with kids between the ages of 2 and 6, and can deal with the constant attention that the kids require on a daily basis. Skills Required Apart from a positive, open minded enthusiasm…not much!. You should love working with childern and should have an interest in new cultures & the environment as well as working with communities in a third world country. Useful Skills We realize that each volunteer that joins us has different skills and varying specialties to offer. Should you feel that you can contribute beyond our itinerary, please inform us so we can use your skills accordingly. (For example art and drama is always needed as is subject knowledge such as maths and literacy education). Volunteer Role You will assist teachers with the large number of children they deal with on a daily basis. Volunteers teach, entertain and organize the children throughout the morning. Talking to the kids in English gives them an important tool in life. Reading stories and playing games enriches their lives and in a small township school, the contact with foreigners broadens horizons and bridges gaps between cultures. About the Area Knysna is known as the Heart of the Garden Route. It is situated on the coast approximately 550 km north of Cape Town in the Western Cape. The projects are in and around the Knysna area on the beaches and wetlands and in the forests, and in Kayelethu which is about a five minute drive from Knysna. Kayelethu is an informal township – alive with African culture! OPTIONS TO TRAVEL TO ADDO NATIONAL PARK, STORMS RIVER AND BLOUKRAANS BUNGEE
