Spend 5 or 10 weeks on this East African expedition that combines wildlife research with community work. Based on an exotic peninsula in Kenya bordering the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, you will divide your time between the island of Wasini, Shimoni village, and satellite camps on the borders of National Parks including world famous Tsavo National Park (on an inland big game programme with the Kenyan Wildlife Service.) Expedition members work extensively with the local community on sustainable development programs. Ten-week expedition members are eligible for an internship, and US college credit is available with many North American Universities.

We assist local partners, including the Kenyan Wildlife Service, by supplying trained manpower, long-term experienced staff, training and equipment for the following projects:

** Marine mammal research recording bottlenose dolphins, Indian Ocean Humpback dolphins, Spinner dolphins and larger cetaceans such as Humpback whales.

** Marine mega-fauna research, including turtles, whale sharks, and manta rays (seasonal)

** Satellite camps and community projects around National Parks.

** Rare coral rag forest exploration and primate surveys including Angolan Black and White Colobus monkeys.

** Teaching English to children and adults Environmental education Community infrastructure and sustainable development.

Location
If you're looking for an expedition in a truly exotic location, then this is the one! Shimoni is a peninsula next to the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Protected Area. Shimoni lies at the tip of the Pemba Channel, 76km south of Mombasa, and is part of a large bay area making up the Shimoni Archipelago. The main base is on Wasini Island which is situated alongside the famous Kisite National Marine Park, opposite the remote fishing village and historical conservation area of Shimoni. A satellite camp is held at Shimoni village to study primates in the rare forest, and every five weeks expedition members spend a week camping and working on the borders of a National Park inland, normally Tsavo, working with anti poaching community groups, all in conjunction with the local partners. There are daily sightings of dolphins from the shores of Wasini Island. You can walk the length of the island passing through mangroves and small villages, with views of the stunning marine park and its coral rag islands. There are several islands and atolls in the area that sport a variety of coral and marine life creating an ideal environment for marine research.

Volunteers will live in an old converted farmhouse with dormitory-style sleeping arrangements, bathrooms, kitchen and a verandah area.
