| Volunteer in Ghana |
Teach English in beautiful coastal Ghana and experience the amazing hospitality this country is famed for |
Volunteers joining this program will work and live within one of several indigenous communities in the Central region of Ghana. Many of the schools are lacking in both staff and resources, and the classrooms are overcrowded. Teaching activities will include play, math, literacy, sports, music, drama and art. A two-day orientation is included to familiarise you with Ghana, which has a fascinating history and rich culture, as well as exploring the surrounding area. No formal teacher-training is required as each volunteer will be supported by the project manager and existing volunteers, as well as the volunteer coordinator, a formal local teacher. However, if you have any experience of teaching or working with children then you will find it of great benefit. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, happy to work with children and prepared to teach in basic conditions. Minimum age for volunteers is 20. Location You will be based in the communities located in the southern Central Region, the main towns are Cape Coast and Elmina, the latter of which is the site of the first European settlement on the African mainland. Cape Coast is the cultural capital of the central region. Ghana is renowned for being one of Africa’s friendliest countries – despite being one of the poorest. Though only the size of the United Kingdom, Ghana’s landscapes range from dry scrub in the north, to rainforests, lush vegetation and pristine beaches in the south. Accommodation has been selected to offer basic but clean and safe facilities. Depending on the community, this will either be in a Guesthouse, rented house or living with a family. Western luxuries such as hot water and electricity are not always available, but this does add to the African experience! Your lockable room is furnished with a bed, desk, cupboard, mosquito meshed windows, clean sheets and pillow. The accommodation block comprises washroom, separate toilet and shower with running water, roof top terrace, shared kitchen area, living room and dining room. What is included Pre-departure support and discounted services Criminal Records Bureau check for UK participants All food and accommodation when on project Airport pick up Orientation on arrival All in country 24 hr support Visit to Elmina Castle on second Sunday of placement.
