Day 1 Leaving Johannesburg, we enter picturesque Mpumalanga and visit Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels and visit an animal orphanage. We continue to a private game reserve in the Greater Kruger and camp on the banks of the Olifants River for our first night on tour.
Day 2 – 3 Rising early we join a cruise on the Olifants river – glimpse hippo, elephant and antelope as they come to drink. We continue into the Kruger National Park. This is ‘big game’ territory and we hope to see some (or all) of Africa’s ‘Big Five’ (leopard, lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo). Kruger contains a hugely diverse fauna, 500+ species of birds, 150 species of mammal and 100 species of reptile. We game drive in mornings and afternoons and try to explore the less frequented northern parts of Kruger to avoid the crowds.
Day 4 – 7 We leave Kruger with an early morning game drive, before continuing to Polokwane Game Reserve. We cross into Botswana, skirt the edges of the Makgadikgadi Pans, passing through Kasane to Zambia and our camp beside the Zambezi River just outside Livingstone. A few kilometres away is Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi plunges 100 metres into the Batoka Gorge. We have time to enjoy the area and try some of the optional activities available here.
Day 8 – 12 We return to Botswana and camp near Chobe National Park, where (optionally) you can take a 4x4 game drive and /or game cruise in the National Park. We travel to Maun and the beautiful Okavango Delta. We spend two days exploring the maze of channels and waterways by dug-out canoe (mokoro) and on foot, camping out on one of the Okavango’s Delta low lying islands. Hippo, crocodile and a variety of birdlife inhabit the area – as do lion, elephant and antelope. A real African experience!
Day 13 – 14 We drive south and visit the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, where we learn a little about the conservation of these magnificent creatures, as well as game drive amidst them, before making our way back into South Africa to Johannesburg where our tour ends.
