Day 1 – 4 From the port city of Dar es Salaam we catch a ferry to Zanzibar - the ‘Spice Island’. This was once one of the most important centres on the East African coast – a centre of slaving and spices, and the base for many of the great 19th century explorers – David Livingstone, John Hanning Speke, Richard Burton and others. Time here is yours to enjoy at leisure. ‘Stone Town’ is the capital and entry point into the island and most people choose to spend at least one night here to explore the alleys, markets and architecture of the town – but then to venture a little farther afield to the north (or the east) to palm-fringed beaches and the warm blue ocean for some ‘serious’ relaxation.
NB As we leave the truck on the mainland, basic tourist class accommodation on Zanzibar is included in the Local Payment but for the sake of flexibility meals are left for your own account. Typically we spend one night in Stone Town and the next two nights in the north of the island at one of the beaches. Your tour leader will be available to assist if you experience any problems but there are no set activities - the time is entirely at leisure
Day 5 – 12 Returning to the African mainland, we have time to browse the curio markets before driving via Mikumi National Park right across Tanzania to Malawi. This is one of the friendliest countries on tour and home to Africa’s third largest lake. We travel along the shore of Lake Malawi stopping at one of the beaches to enjoy the hospitality of the local people. Try scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing or horse riding, as well as a local village walk. Leaving the lake, we cross into Zambia and on to Lusaka for a night near the country’s capital.
Day 13 – 16 We arrive at Livingstone close to Africa’s Victoria Falls. As well as being one of Africa’s greatest spectacles this is also Africa’s ‘adrenaline’ capital. Try white water rafting, bungy jumping or scenic flights to name but a few! For something more relaxing why not take an elephant back safari, horse-riding safari, or sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River? We visit the ‘Falls’ themselves – depending on season gaze into the 100 metre deep Batoka gorge, or admire the spray as it plumes up from the awesome power of the river as it flows into the narrow canyon below.
Day 17 – 22 From Livingstone we cross into Botswana to the town of Kasane near Chobe National Park. Here you may like to enjoy an afternoon cruise on the Chobe River. We then move quickly south, via Nata and Francistown to South Africa and the Kruger National Park. Here you have a final opportunity to game-drive in one of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves. Kruger is South Africa’s largest and best known wildlife area with a huge diversity of fauna and flora. Finally, we travel via the Mpumalanga province to Johannesburg where the tour ends.
