Day 1 – 7 From Nairobi we cross the Great Rift Valley and enter the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya’s premier wildlife park. Our camp gives us perfect access to the park for afternoon and morning game drives in search of the ‘Big Five’ and other wildlife. We may also visit a Maasai village and talk to these traditional people who live in the area around the reserve. From the ‘Mara’, we briefly head back to Nairobi before crossing into Tanzania to Arusha. Another opportunity to meet the local Maasai people but don’t forget to visit the Meserani Snake enclosure – don’t worry it’s quite safe!. We transfer to 4x4 vehicles for a 3-day excursion to the Serengeti National Park, Olduvai Gorge and the Ngorongoro Crater. From the broad flat plains of the Serengeti to the staggeringly beautiful views over the Ngorongoro Crater, enjoy East Africa’s scenery and wildlife as you realise you have only been on tour for a week!
Day 8 – 14 From Arusha we drive in the shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro, across vast tracts of savannah to the port city of Dar es Salaam. Almost always hot and humid we escape the city on the regular ferry to Zanzibar to experience three days of leisure and tropical delight. Explore Stone Town’s alleyways, architecture and markets but leave time to visit the beaches, white sands, leaning palms and tropically warm waters for some ‘serious’ relaxation. Returning to the African mainland, we leave the coast and drive via Mikumi National Park into Malawi.
Day 15 – 21 This is one of the friendliest countries on tour and home to Africa’s third-largest lake. With over 600 species of fish (most of them endemic) the lake provides living for many of the Malawi people. We make camp beside one of the beaches - try diving, snorkelling, sailing or horseback riding or take a guided village walk to see how the locals live. Leaving Malawi we cross into Zambia and make our way to Lusaka, the capital.
Day 22 – 24 Livingstone, close to Victoria Falls, is our base for the next few days. In addition to the awesome beauty of Victoria Falls the area is also Africa’s ‘adventure’ capital - try white water rafting, gorge-swinging, canoeing or even bungy jumping! Alternatively, enjoy elephant back and walking safaris, or else - simply relax at our riverside campsite. We view the Victoria Falls from Mosi-Oa-Tunya (‘Smoke That Thunders’) National Park and have time at leisure. N.B. Local Payment is suspended in Livingstone for days 24 and 25. Please allow for meals and accommodation in your spending budget.
Day 25 – 26 Leaving the overland truck we continue our journey in smaller vehicles, heading into Botswana and the town of Kasane. Chobe National Park is known for its herds of elephant and there is an option here to enjoy an afternoon game drive or a game-viewing cruise on the Chobe River.
Day 27 – 32 Moving quickly we continue to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. We venture out into the Okavango itself to explore by dugout canoe (mokoro) its reed-filled channels and on foot its island sanctuaries. For another view of the Okavango, take a scenic flight – a real ‘bird’s eye view over the wetlands. Continuing south, we stop at the Khama Rhino Sanctuary to view these magnificent animals at close quarters. Finally we cross into South Africa for the final drive into Johannesburg, where our safari ends
