We enter the Mpumalanga province and enjoy some breath taking scenery – Blyde River Canyon and the Three Rondavels. The Blyde River Canyon is revered as an unusual one owing to the fact that it is a ‘wet’ canyon, making it different from the wind-carved dry canyons found in desert regions worldwide. After lunch we make our way closer to South Africa’s famed Kruger Park. Our accommodation is located a short 10km drive from the entrance gate to the Kruger National Park.
We travel into Kruger National Park in search of Africa’s ‘Big Five’ - elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo. The area contains a hugely diverse fauna – over 500 species of birds, 150 species of mammals and 100 species of reptile. We game drive in morning and afternoon exploring the less frequented northern parts of Kruger to escape the crowds.
We leave the Kruger area and drive north through scenic mountain passes to the Polokwane Game Reserve where we have the opportunity of exploring the reserve on foot. There are over 21 species of mammals, including white rhino, and 200 species of birds inhabiting the reserve and this is an exciting way to get up close to some of these species. We spend the night at a nearby lodge where we prepare for our epic journey crossing the Limpopo River into Zimbabwe.
Day 4 – 7
This morning we cross into Zimbabwe and make our way to Bulawayo, a pleasant city with broad tree lined avenues and wide open spaces. The following day, we enter the Matobo National Park. The reserve has the largest concentration of Black and White Rhino in Africa and, provided conditions are right, our guides will lead us on foot to some of the more concealed places in search of these magnificent animals. Departing bustling Bulawayo, we continue north to make our way to Victoria Falls. The falls themselves plunges into the Batoka Gorge - a highlight of any trip to Africa. We have time to enjoy the area and try some of the optional activities available here.
Day 8 – 12
We head to Botswana and camp near Chobe National Park, where we enjoy and sunset cruise and a 4x4 game drive and in the National Park. We travel to Maun and the beautiful Okavango Delta. We spend a night in a tented camp exploring the maze of channels and waterways by dug-out canoe (mokoro) and on foot in search for hippo, crocodile and a variety of birdlife inhabit the area. A real African experience!
Day 13 – 14
We drive south and visit the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, where we learn a little about the conservation of these magnificent creatures, as well as game drive amidst them, before making our way back into South Africa to Johannesburg where our tour ends.
