Malawi, Nyika Plateau Safari & Lake Malawi

Brief Overview
Explore the open grasslands of the high Nyika Plateau. This is an authentic alpine experience within south central Africa. The highland Nyika Plateau, Malawi, boasts immense vistas of high-altitude grasslands, rolling hills, isolated ridges and is bursting with endemic wildlife.

The itinerary is combined with a South Luangwa National Park experience in the Nsefu sector. The Luangwa Valley, which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, is one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. It covers an area of over 9000 sq. km. through which the meandering Luangwa River runs. The ox bow lagoons, woodland and plains of the valley host huge concentrations of game - including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo - and over 400 species of birds.

Safaris end on the beautiful shores on Lake Malawi at Pumulani (place of rest!), Nankumba Peninsula. This peninsula in the South end of the Lake is recognised as one of the most beautiful shores of the Lake and borders Lake Malawi National Park. This Park was established in order to protect the cichlid fish unique to the area. In 1984 the park was designated a World Heritage Site.

Day by Day itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive Lilongwe.
Transfer to flight for an hour’s flight hop onto Mfuwe Airport. Here a guide will take you to camp via colourful village life but mostly through the park – a chance to catch your first sightings of the Luangwa game. The Nsefu Sector was recognised then as a phenomenal area and it still is. the only two camps in this sector of the Park. Nsefu was the first game camp in Zambia and dates back to the early fifties The camp is on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. There are six round rondavals with luxurious ensuite facilities and each room has a clear view of the river through large windows and from the new wooden verandahs. On arrival at your camp you will be shown to your accommodation and then lunch will be served followed by a well deserved siesta before the afternoon and evening game drive.

Day 2 & 3
These are days to drive or walk through the ebony groves. Or you may decide this is an ideal day depending on the heat and time of year to explore the Nsefu Sector of the National Park possibly with an all day picnic drive to the salt pans that will cover different habitats and is an exceptional day’s safari.

Day 4
After breakfast you will be transferred back to Mfuwe Airport for your charter to Nyika National Park, Malawi. Here you will meet your guide for the next 4 nights. You will have a chance to do at least one activity on this day or simply take in the breath taking views of the Nyika.

Day 5 – 7
Chelinda offers guests a truly African alpine experience. Located at high altitude on the Nyika Plateau within the Nyika National Park in Malawi. Overlooking a crystal-clear dam with panoramic views of rolling hills, isolated ridges and open high-altitude grasslands, Chelinda has access to rich pockets of wildlife endemic to this region. Game that can be spotted at the Nyika Plateau are Burchell's Zebra, Roan antelope, Common Reedbuck, Eland, Bushbuck, Warthog, and leopard.

Activities at Chelinda revolve around day and night nature drives which explore the rolling hills and patches of evergreen forest of the Nyika Plateau. Nature walks and mountain biking are also very popular. For the enthusiast, there is also the option of fly-fishing for trout.

Birders will be pleased to know that some 400 bird species can be found around Chelinda Camp.

Day 8
Today you will be transferred to your last stop of the itinerary, the shores of Lake Malawi. Transfer will be a charter flight to Monkey Bay airstrip then 20 minute drive to the lodge.
Pumulani is situated on the Westside of the Nankumba Peninsula in the South end of Lake Malawi – romantically called “The Lake of Stars”. The ten villas are scattered around the hillside and are individual in shape and style but all have a spacious bedroom, bathroom and extensive sitting area. The front sliding doors open onto the deck – elevated above the ground giving optimal views.

The central dinning and bar area is high above the lake with the most spectacular views and leads onto an expansive deck. The infinity swimming pool is on a lower terraced deck. The lake shore bar offers light snacks as well as refreshments

Meals are served in the dining area, on the beach or by arrangement on your private deck.
The stunning setting of the lodge and the unique comfort of the rooms means that many guests choose to make relaxation their main activity, but there is enough activities available to keep guests busy.

Day 9
Enjoy the first full day of relaxation. Our remote beach setting is ideal for those who simply want to soak up the sun and swim in the clear blue waters of the lake. Those who prefer to take a dive in the swimming pool, we have a infinity swimming pool near the central dining area with grand views over the lake. For those seeking activity we offer many watersports activities like snorkelling, fishing, sailing, kayaking, waterskiing, wake boarding and fun tube rides (all motorized activities are excluded).

At the end of the day climb aboard our dhow and let our experienced local crewmen take you sailing into the sunset.

Day 10
Today you might want to go on a special picnic tour to one of the islands (not included in the rate). Our boat takes you along the shores of Lake Malawi National park – since 1984 a World Heritage site. On the way you will see many fish eagles and other interesting birds. The water is so clear that you will observe marine life from aboard the boat. Lake Malawi is the world’s most ecologically diverse lake. Its crystal clear waters are home to more than a thousand species of fish, including hundreds of species of colourful cichlids. We offer special diving courses at the best diving spots near one of the islands. For those who are interested in the real Malawian village life we offer guided walks through one of the local villages. Malawians are renowned for being amongst the friendliest people in Africa and during your stay you will have the opportunity to meet them.

You can also simply relax in the beautiful and tranquil scenery or can enjoy the many other activities.

Day 11
On the final day of your Africa vacation package you bid farewell to the lodge. You will be transferred back to Monkey Bay airstrip where you will take a light aircraft to Lilongwe time for the connecting flight back home.

About our trip providers and reviews

Our Trip Providers

We carry out extensive company checks on all our providers, over 20 years we have built strong personal relationships with each of them, which assures you of an unparalleled service, great value and the trip of a lifetime.
We have participated in many of the trips found here (we have a nice job) and make our own independent assessments of the services provided, ensuring they meet with our own high standards.

All the trips are supplied by the end provider of that trip.
You may find the same or similar trips elsewhere, usually these are offered by an agent.
We prefer to give you direct access to the trip provider for reasons outlined below:

  1. Best price.
The price you see here is the direct trip price set by the provider, the same price as purchasing directly with them (which is how it works), there are no added commissions.
This means you are not paying an agents commission and the provider is receiving their fully budgeted trip cost.
(agents can demand discounts from providers as well as adding commissions to the providers trip price)
  2. Easy customisation.
By booking directly with the end provider, making changes is quick and easy.
  3. Fast problem solving.
On the rare occasion that an issue may arise before or during your trip, by dealing directly with the end provider, problem solving is quick and efficient.
  4. Helping Africa help itself.
The most straightforward way to assist the economic opportunities and conditions for local people across Africa, is by direct financial interaction with people in Africa. In a nutshell "Tourism".
This kind of direct tourism gives opportunity to local people.

We limit the number of providers we work with in order to strike a balance between a good choice of trips and to be sure we can honestly recommend the service and validity of each provider.
Because the majority of trips can be customised by the providers, the choice of trip configurations is in the tens of thousands.

Our Reviews

We have 3,000+ reviews for our trips and providers.
All our reviews are fully qualified, we do not take unqualified reviews.
We show all reviews, the good and the critical (very few). Our providers have the ability to respond to reviews and those responses are shown alongside the review.
Acquiring genuine reviews is actually very hard, for our genuine travellers we make this an easy process but many people although satisfied with the service they received do not leave a review.

Many reviews on the internet can be left by an open process with little or no checks.
At best unqualified reviews are worthless, at worst they are misleading. We never take unqualified reviews.

We hope you find a trip to your liking and we are here to assist.

Wishing you happy travels...
