Lilongwe is unfotunately a bit of a shithole. For a capital city there is scarily little to do there, however: eating out - Mamma Mias, good Italian food, Don Brionis - excellent all round meals, Portugese Club - fine Chinese. Avoid the Nature Sanctuary, nauseating and dangerous. For weekends your best bet is the Northern Lakeshore. Not too sure about Blantyre to Vic Falls but I did bus from Vic Falls to Lilongwe last year. From Livingstone to Lusaka is a great bus-service. Luxury ones they'd imported from Brazil apparently. Lusaka to Lilongwe was hell, a very old, somewhat decrepid bus rammed full of people plus the obligatory goats and chickens. 18 hours in total! ...by James in: Malawi Travel Forum

Ok, as someone who has now pretty much seen every lodge north of Senga Bay, here are the best. #1 Ngala Beach Lodge, stunning, cheap to camp & dorm, great bar/restaurant. #2 Kande Beach, more than just a campsite, diving, horse riding, watersports, massive party spot. #3 Makuzi, up-market but literally the most spectacular spot on the whole lakeshore.
