Safari East Africa Sep/Oct 2003

After doing a lot of research on safaris Kenya/Tanzania has anybody out there any experience with getting of the plane, spending a couple of days checking around and booking their own safari or is it wiser to pre-book through a tour company etc before getting there? We have lots of time to plan this so the more info the better.
