Hi folks
i am Kwame recently back to England after a visit to Kenya . I am determined to set up an orphanage and I'm in the early stages of researching into it. I have got theree prospective sites and am waiting for confirmation of availabilty and costs of the land in those particular sites. I have also got budget estimates for building and costs of the day-to- day running but i dont have enough info on the laws and regulations and particular government bodies relevant to setting up such an institution. Anyone interested in suporting me in this , and or giving me any infornmation ,advice etc, its most welcome.
peace Kwame

Hello Kwame237,
I am a director of a childrens home in Kenya and maybe able to give you some advice.
To open an Orphanage you will need to get registered with the Kenyan Government and also the provincial children's welfare department. This can be a long and drawn out process but without it you can be closed down and charges made against you.
what made you decide to open an orphanage in Kenya and will you be living out there to run it? I would be interested to hear how this plan started.
I hope this helps
Matt

Hello matt01277,
Many thanks for your response
Thanks for your advice . With regards to registering with the Kenyan Government i am aware of that but i had no idea about the provincial children's welfare department. This is exactly the kind of information i need so i am very grateful. Even if its a long and drawn out process , as it is an essentila step in the process then i am willing to do it.
I was in Kenya last month but noone made me aware of this important step. What ever i do in Kenya i want it to be done with the full knowledge and blessings of the Kenya Government .

As to what made me decide to open an orphanage ...well i have been visiting Kenya for many years and was wondering how i could assist the orphans and street children in some way.
I did much research into charities and giving so decided to visit and give money to orphanages. So i visited various orphanages in Mombasa during March eight weeks ago . What struck me was how the orphanages lacked certain resources which in effect have detrimental effects on the development of the children. So i thought a good idea would be to set one up that is purpose built with suitable probvision built in from the design stage, thus learning lessons from all that i've seen and trying to take the positives and immprove on them.
Yes I would like to live out there to run it, at least for some time, but i dont know the government stance with visas and so forth so i need to do more research into that.

Once again many thanks and keep in touch as it would be good to share ideas experiences . I would be very interested to know more about the practicalities of the day to day running of the orphanages and what challenges are faced and what can be done to help.
What i did know is that there are certain criteria a home/orphanage must fulfuill and if they dont they are labelled as not recomended for registration, i have no idea of the criteria , but a few of the places i visited had that quote hanging over them

Maybe you could tell me about your orphanage in particular and where you are in Kenya. As i say i have only visited orphanages in Mombasa
Kwame
i have enclosed my direct e mail in case you need it

Hi Sherren
I'm Kwame. With regards to setting up an orphanage, I'm still in the early stages although much further along.

I have a group here in the UK and we intend to form a charity and put up a web site.
I also have a group in Kenya willing to assist and also some people in Arusha willing to help. So I am now at the stage where i need
people interested in suporting the project financially.

As i returned from Kenya only days ago ( just before christmas) I now have the costs for land , building and costs of the day-to- day running of the orphanage( allthough these costs seem to be changing weekly/monthly due to escalating prices ). I have also got all the info i need on the laws, regulations and the relavant government bodies to contact in regards to setting up.
So i can say that pending the report of what i experienced this time around, the research is complete and we are at a stage where we can begin fundraising
I Look forward to hearing from you
Kwame

Hi Sherren,
thanks for the reply.
Its still early in our plans,
we havent purchased land yet as we are now ata stage of fundraising and trying to get sponsors and well wishers onboard

We paln to cater for around 20 children to start with but our building will have a capacity of aboyut 30
we are looking to ages between 5 - 10 as before 5 kids need specialist support and after 10 it can be hard for them to settle in .
Still, these are just guidelines based on the research i have done and are not hard and fast rules
i am sure there will be leway at either end depending on circumstances of the child .

We will not be a religion based orphanage but the religion of all the children will be catered for through local churches and mosques etc

Look forward to hearing from you too.
You can contact me directly on kwamegad33@hotmail.com if you need to
Its easier for me despitre the risk of spammers
Thanks Kwame

I am involved in a group which is looking to start an orphanage in Kenya, perhaps in a small village outside a city. We have funding and that is not an issue, but we could really do with advice on the legal side, such as registering and buying land/property. Any assistance would be very gratefully received!

About a year ago, you posted you were wanting to start an orphanage in Kenya. My ministry is currently working with a native pastor in Kenya who since 1995 have been taking care of orphans by feeding, educating and clothing them. They have helped them find temporary housing, but the time has come for the need to build a facility for housing and a better facility to educate and feed the children. I have been working with this pastor for some time, and we are trying to line things up.
My question is, have you done anything with the orphanage you were interested in building? If not, would you have an interest in visiting? Please email me back. jdministries@rocketmail.com

I have hands-on experience in managing child development programmes including establishment of orphanages, facilitating legal compliance requirements, rescue process, staff induction and general administration. I have been in children's ministry with faith based organizations for the past 15 years. I am currently a programmes manager with a children's charity

I am interested teaming up with any donor with special interest in starting similar programmes in Kenya.

Please let me know so that I can send to you my personal email.

Thanks

Vincent
