female traveling to south africa

I am planning to travel to South africa this may 2006 landing in j'burg. As a single female I have been warned that this wouldnt be the smartest thing to do..does anyone have any advice? Or is there anyone living in london traveling to SA in midmay and would like to travel there togther to start out?

hey, not sure about joburg, haven't been there... though sometime ago been to Cape Town on my own, i must say spent perfect time there. Haven't seen anything horrible and awful there, on the contarary, nice, friendly people. Of course I suppose everything depends on where exactly you are going to stay, if you have a hotel booking (!GOOD HOTEL!), planning to rent a car etc, if you have any friends or just people you know... in that case i guess not a big deal to travel alone... but me personaly wouldn't travel to Joburg, that's kind of a completely different story. btw, are you staying long there, i was thinking of taking a tour to SA again in the near future, end of may - june this year

Having visited South Africa In 2004 for two months as a single female, my experience taught me that jo'burg can be a dangerous place but that should not put you off as it is a wonderful place to visit. My advise would be to arrange to meet someone at the other end and know where your going. Im also planning a years trip to cape town on a working visa which will start in feburary 2007.
