Hello!

Me (27yrs) and my husband (32yrs) are thinking about moving to Mauritius (from Finland) maybe after a year or so, and we would like to know what the general work and house situation is over there?

We would like to rent a 1-2 bedroom apartment/house, we still don't know where, but we would appreaciate having some kind of price range on those houses, depending on the location. Does electricity, gas and water include in rents?

My husband is in IT-business (has been all his life). His work is mainly managing, e-commerce, developing, IT-support etc. (but not any kind of software related work) what kind of work situation do you have there for people like my husband? What kind of salary are we talking about for jobs like those?

I on the other hand do not have any specific work area which I would like to be involved while living there.. I am willing to do almost any kind of work (wash dishes, cleaning, work in a bar/coffee shop, pick fruits etc. etc.) Do you have need for people like me, who can and will do all kinds of jobs, in Mauritius? How much does those jobs pay?

What kind of work areas are in need of employees at this point/in general?

We were thinking about saving money before moving there just in case we don't find jobs right away. What do you think, is 5-6 months reasonable period of time to find jobs, if we would save that much money first?

Do salaries get paid once a month, or often?

How much money do you reckon we should have per month, so that the both of us can live a normal life, eating out once in a while (please give out the total sum for the both of us, in MUR)?

How much does Internet connections cost in Mauritius? Is the price a lot different, depending on nortn and south for instance? What kind of options do you have on those, especially speed interests me?

What about working visas? Is it hard to get one? I still haven't looked around for it, so I'm asking you now, can we just apply for one visa and both work with that, or do we both need our own working visas and how much does those cost?

If you have good website links on visas, rent houses, jobs and other kinds of "every day" sites which can help us get to know Mauritius better, please let us know!

Love,

Maiju

Dear Maiju

First of all, as a Mauritian, I'd like to thank you for loving my country. Now the serious part starts. heheheh!

In fact, I'm a business consultant, specialist in expatriate services, immigration/passport issues, business setting ups. There are different schemes that will allow you to stay in Mauritius. There are no longer work or residence permits now, we will only have an Occupation permit as from 1 October. IF you want to stay, you'll have to choose an appropriate formula: either someone hires you, or you open your own business, or you work as self=employed. Each one has its own requirements.

I'll be glad to help you and your husband out. So feel free to get in touch with your precise questions. Let me first answer the ones you posted here:

(i) 1-2 bedroom apartment (for expatriates) is in the range of Rs9,000-Rs13,000

(ii) Your husband can get an excellent job if he has qualifications. In fact, I've got one client who has launched his own e-commerce business, and the guy is now earning a pretty decent (not to say largely much more than that) income.

(iii) You would probably obtain a job in a call centre if you talk good english. Or even in the front office of a hotel.. WE can talk about that

(iv) Salaries are monthly.

(v) Normal ADSL Internet connection around Rs1,200 per month for 128Kb.

(vi) Work visas? I can handle, that's my playground. First, you need to sort out how you want to go about the whole thing.

Good day

I have seen your reply to the lady and I am also interested in moving to Mauritius.
I have a Diploma in International Travel but it is so difficult to get a job. I am one module away from getting my National Professional Diploma in Education.
Do you have any advice for me on how do I go about to actually get a job that pays well enough for me to survive in Mauritius?

Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Nadeem,

I'm quite impressed with the knowledge you have in migrating to mu.
My fiance is a mauritian who is currently in singapore and i'm a Singaporean. We plan to get married next year and move to mauritius but i'm quite skeptical about the job oppurtunities available over there as i'm not prepared to leave mu current job here to go there only to find it hard to secure another job.
Please advice as to whether i can get a well paying job. I've got a BSc(Hons) in Computer Science but have never actually put it to use. I'm currently a Manager in the SIngapore University. I'm more interested in the education sector. Is it easy to get jobs in this field there? If so, what would be the pay i'll be looking at.
Also, how much does it cost to buy a property in the west of mu? And are there loans we can get from banks? WHat is the procedure for applying for a occupational pass?

Thanks!!

Don't be impressed! That's been my profession for 15 years grinning smiley I'd advise, not to discourage you,to see Mauritius as a country still trying to imitate Singapore. Your country is a model we're trying to get to. So don't make yourself any illusions by comparing the level of Singapore and Mauritius grinning smiley

Job market here will be a bit dense for you cause Bsc Computer Science (depending on experience) will start on relatively low salary. Education sector is booming and you might well interest some good private schools or even new universities taht are being set up. Here your chances (because of your exposure in Singapore) might be the joker card.

If your fiance is Mauritian, he gets direct access to land acquisition rights and of course loan, provided you provide the required security. In your case, you may put a mortgage on the land itself!

Feel free to get me on email if you require any other info. (applies for all of you who believe that I may be useful grinning smiley)

My husband and I are seriously investigating moving to Mauritius via his current company which has a branch in Port Louis. We have 2 children age 8 and 6. We live in South Africa and have a comfortable life here. We are looking to make a lifestyle change and are finding it difficult to find information related to this possible move. I would like to hear about the kind of life we could lead there, we want quality of life for our family and dont have to live in Port Louis itself.

Hi Nadeem,

I was hoping you could help me with a little info. regarding work permits in Mauritius.

I am an Optometrist from South Africa and have an opportunity to work in Mauritius very soon. My work permit etc. will all be arranged by the company I'll be working for.

My concern lies with my boyfriend getting a work permit etc. He has a Masters degree in Computer Science, yet when I look for job availability in Mauritius we don't seem to be able to find any positions available. Would you by any chance have a contact or any information with regards to jobs and work permits for him in Mauritius?

We'd really appreciate your help or advice on this matter.

Hi

My husbands grandfather is from mauritius but he does not have a mauritian passport though he will go to mauritius soon from south africa to see if he can get one. If he can get one will my husband as his grandson be able to get a mauritian passport? We would like to live there in the future. If he can't get a passport what other options do we have? We have no degrees in anything.
Any help would be appreciated.
