Hi,
I'm 1 of 4 medical students who are coming to Mauritius to attend an elective in the Victoria Hospital in Nov 2004!
We would be very grateful if you can provide us with any info on the next subjects:

1. Cheap housing (we are staying for 2 months!)
2. Anything about (electives in )the Victoria Hospital.
Many, many thanks in advance,

Medical elective in Mauritius

I am hoping to organise a medical elective in Mauritius from May to July this year but was unsure as to who I should contact regarding the logistics of it all. I noticed some medical students posting note on the website about organising their electives a few years ago. I was wondering if I could somehow contact them to get their opinion/advice on what to do, or if there is a coordinator who can provide me with links to doctors/hospitals etc....
Looking forward to your reply.

I'm going to Mauritius in sept for elective. You need to google ministry of health, mauritius and find their website. All applications go through Ms Ooriah, use the fax number on the website as they do not seem to respond to telephone or email. You need to send them a CV and a letter from your med school stating who you are. They will post you a letter which is short and says nothing much except they accept you in principle. that's all you need according to past med students. you just turn up at the hospital with the letter. hope that helps anymore questions email me.

Hi mlee or the others who are going to or already were in Mauritius.
Since I am planning to do 8 weeks of my surgery elective in Mauritius it would be great to get some more information on the hospitals. To which hospital should I go?
Is it possible to call one of you guys?
Thanks a lot,
Christian

Heya Christian,
I'm a final year medical student at the University of Queensland in Australia. I'm heading to Mauritius in two weeks (22nd May 08) to do 8 weeks at the SSRN hospital.
To secure any placement you need to contact Ms Ooriah by phoning the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life. Try googleing it.
I'm not sure which hospital is best - I chose this one cos it's large and near the nice beaches. I can let you know what it is like once I get there. You can email on goughanna@hotmail.com.
Cheers
Anna

Hi, I am currently trying to get in touch with anyone who can give me the contact details of anyone in Mauritius who deals with electives. No one I have tried so far has replied!! So if anyone has the email/ telephone number of someone that they found useful when planning their elective (or any general advice really!) I'd be truly grateful!

Thanks,
Cassie

Hi, I am interested myself too in taking an elective in Mauritius and I am trying to gather some info about how to apply and who should I contact...
Are there any special requirements (eg. year of studies, etc)?
Also, could anyone give me some info about the average cost of spending one month there?
Any help highly appreciated!

Thank you all in advance

Hi all,

We are currently planning planning our elective to Mauritius (myself and a friend - final years in Leicester uni, England). We have got to the point where we are being 'processed' by the Ministry of Health (Mrs Ooriyah - 00230 2011916) who seem to deal with all of the elective students. They do not seem to be very willing to give us more information however as to what will happen after we have been processed by the MoH.

Has anyone got any experience of this process and would mind telling us what to expect as we're not sure if we need to contact the hospital directly or wait on the MoH to do it? Also does anyone have any idea about the accomodation nearest to the SSRN hospital and how to go about organising this accomodation?

Thanks

Anna

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could let me know how to get in touch with SSRN (or any of the other mauritian hospitals) for a medical student elective.

Also if anyone has been there for an elective, some feedback for what it's like, how to find accomodation, costs on the island...

Thanks! smiling smiley

Hi - you have to phone up the ministry of health of Mauritius and they organise it for you. The contact telephone number is on "the electives network" website i think. They require a CV, a letter of application, and a letter from your medical school. Thats what they asked for from me. I'm going there this summer hopefully.

Hey guys,

I am a medical student at UoD, going home (Mauritius) for my elective this July. If any of you need information about anything, I'm happy to help. Also, my brother is involved in organising placements for foreign students for AIESEC, I'm sure he'll have a few affordable accomdations at hand if neededwinking smiley

Hi everyone,

I am a medical student at Sheffield University.

I would really appreciate if someone can help me with organising a placement at a hospital somewhere in Mauritius or with someone at the medical school please?
