My theory : malawi is one of those places you love the first time you visit but never as good the second time ..

I went in 88/89 long before the London - 2 - Cape Town hike thru africa became the in thing .. now its Bilharzia , 150US / night ....

what a pity

150$/night is the tourist trap rate, I suggest you get off the beaten path.

Malawi is more beautiful each time I visit, the Bilharzia in the lake is a thing of the past.

Malawi is as lovely as ever. Just don't stop by Kande Beach and do stop by places like Lukwe Permaculture Camp or the Guest Houses on the Livingstonia Plateau and Mwaya Beach Lodge. Not a lodge at all by any stretch of the imagination but 20+/-kms south of Chintheche and a great place to relaxand get to know the local people and culture. Check out Mwaya's website at:
www.afticaguide.com/mwaya to get an idea of it all.
